A warmly lit home. Laughter cascades from the open windows. The scent of frangipanis lingers in the sultry air.
#ScribesAndMakers 10. (Excluding time travel) Do you have a preference between books that progress linearly and books that jump back and forth in time (flashbacks etc)?
Linearly. I don't mind the odd flashback, well used, but during that diversion, I always feel a tension to return to the main story. And if there are too many diversions or if it's unclear which is even the main story, I find the whole book frustrating.

Lefty would feel himself being sucked out into the vacuum of space.

I love that really important parts of my main character's humanity (like free will) exist as bugs in her robot brain.

Later. At the time. I'm the last person to pretend I don't sometimes write badly. I still feel like I'm always slowly improving though, so that's nice.

No. CJ is a field researcher and academic, and his title is doctor, but the bureaucratic structure under which he operates isn't really discussed.
When I get back into making games , I have some ideas for what's basically (or at least began as) a sapphic teen wolf spoof, and I'd age that up to uni .
#WordWeavers 21—Does the change of seasons affect your writing at all? If so, how?
Not noticeably, among all the other fluctuations. I have notable highs and lows that affect my writing (and all other aspects of my life) but as far as I've been able to tell, they're not seasonal.
#WordWeavers 10. Your MC turns around in the last scene you wrote. What do they see?
Betty can't really turn around on her own, yet, but she did get turned around in the last scene I wrote, and saw the stars for the first time.

Lefty is fundamentally a selfish villain. He'd never willingly choose a CERTAIN death. But he's got an overinflated sense of confidence and often RISKS death for very little reason at all.

Pacing, both within and across scenes. It's something I feel like I struggle with getting right, and with assessing whether I have it right.

I feel like I'm still just starting out (because I am!) and I'm sure I'll keep feeling that way at least until I (self-)publish something complete. But I feel like I've improved and grown a lot, and I appreciate the community here. I'm working out how to do the thing and that feels good. And that sense of accomplishment is pretty important in my life at the moment.
#PennedPossibilities 1038 — What would your MC say their personal weaknesses or flaws are? Would other characters agree?
I think Betty would probably talk about some of the things she's restricted from doing by her programming (Like flying ships and operating heavy machinery, or being sad, or doing a murder). Gozen would agree, and tries to help her overcome those hurdles, while others (like Jay) have reservations and feel that maybe those restrictions are in place for a good reason.

#WritersCoffeeClub 8. Do you do warm-ups before or cool-downs after a writing session?
It's never occurred to me to try, but I suppose these hashtag games might serve that purpose of getting me settled at my computer and putting down words.
I have no evidence of this, but my guess is that nobody's buying tokens for Yellow (#Daz3d's AI thing which, to their credit, is trained on their own models) so they're dogfooding. It really seems like around the start of March they tasked some intern with churning out a new uninspired Daz Original character model every couple of days.
We're never going to get anyone just admitting that their AI strategy was a mistake, are we? NFT deja vu.

the plan is that hyperspace will be a beautiful lightshow. I'm imagining a psychedelic kind of Dr Who thing for a couple of seconds.
For stark contrast, passing through a warp gate is instant and uneventful. You'd never even know you did it - except for the taste.
Warping tastes like arse, and nobody knows why. Different people experience it differently but it's always revolting. Jay HATES warp travel - he gets nauseated just thinking about it.

#LoveMakeShare 5. Scope creep affects us all. Have you ever managed to perfectly scope a project that could easily have gotten out of control?
In programming, yes, I got fairly good at that. In writing, not even close - give me ten years and I might work it out.

@zkat Ugh. "Debate me" vampires. Sucking energy from fruitful pursuits and turning other people into more "debate me" vampires, too.
Unfortunately the thing about them having to be invited in is a myth, but they should definitely be thrown out.

The other is warping - a warp gate folds space to connect two points and you pass through it to go from one to the other without passing through any of the space (or hyperspace) in between. This is how people move between star systems (once a ship has previously travelled there via more conventional means to set up the gate at the other end).
I wanted to disambiguate the two by making them feel very different. I haven't got to those parts of the story yet, but

Oh, and I was today years old when I found out that victuals is pronounced "vittles" (and it used to be spelt without the C, too - it came to English from French, without the C, then folks decided to "fix" it back to something more like the Latin, but we kept the pronunciation.)

As Jay himself will tell you, if you're into dad jokes or dad bods, he's your guy.
Gozen is into neither.
Why is Dawkins back in my feed? He hasn't done anything noteworthy in 20 years. If we ignore him, he goes away. (And he knows it - thus the occasional desperate attempts at creating controversy.)

@jsstaedtler@mastodon.art My thought was very similar, but rather than trying to figure out which tags are exclusive, just don't let the user add filters if there are 0 or 1 results, because why would they? (Perhaps even if there's only one page of results?)

(In Moral Void, hyperspace isn't technically FTL - it just lets you jump to speeds approaching c and back again.)
I'm trying to use extreme warm-cool light contrasts a lot in Moral Void, to help give that cyberpunk aesthetic. I keep accidentally painting myself into really tricky lighting corners though.
I think I might just start claiming that it's intentional and totally capital-A Art.
"The lighting in this scene highlights the fundamental disconnect between the internal realities of the characters. PentUp's mastery of expressionism serves to..." Yeah, nah, okay, I'm done.

@hanakogames@mastodon.gamedev.place I assume they mean call and response is as old as time. Like "Hey where are you?" "Over here!"
But it's not very clear since that doesn't feel like what you do with a phone.
