Have officially moved into the new Aussie house out in country Victoria.

2 camp chairs. An inflatable bed. A side table. And an invisible fridge.

Student days again! Anyone know where to nick some milk crates for side tables???

Sweden has just purloined a Russian shadow fleet vessel filled with stolen grain from Ukraine. This opens up a major problem for Putin and his illegal war.

Go! You little Swedes!

In our new house awaiting a delivery. Between 0800 and 1800, I arrived at 0754. What will be the delivery time...?

My guess... cancelled at 1800 and rescheduled for 0800 to 1800 tomorrow...

A long and fascinating post on how Mark Carney just held a press conference and may have upended the post WW2 world order by repudiating the US.

@WiteWulf@cyberplace.social it'd be a fine way to give a lot of public money to the shareholders of a basically worthless business. probably in the billions. apart from people refusing to let the past go, there's little benefit to anyone here. a lot like trying to resurrect British commercial shipbuilding. https://www.construction-physics.com/p/how-the-uk-lost-its-shipbuilding?hide_intro_popup=true

@samueljohnson@mstdn.social @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk sorry? What?!?!? Where did the UK come from in this? The ECJ forced Apple to pay Ireland $10 billion in back taxes... a ruling that Ireland fought tooth and nail... because of their dodgy tax regulations. If you're trying to make this suddenly about the UK you can't upset me as I'm an Aussie in Australia. Ireland, quite simply, is a dodgy tax haven for software companies. If a German company transacts all of its European business out of Ireland, you know it is something very dodgy.

@samueljohnson@mstdn.social @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk I am not in the UK. However I did spend 25 years in an EU wide software sales role for a big American company. We transacted every contract out of Ireland because it was hugely tax advantageous. All the big software companies do, even if they're based in the EU. It even makes Ireland look super competitive for intellectual property because those same companies get even bigger tax rebates if they register their patents in Ireland. No development done there, but patents aplenty!

@ploum@mamot.fr in technical subjects these days where LLM and generators are heavily used in industry, i think that tool use in exams should almost be mandatory. if you're writing code for my company i don't want you writing everything by hand these days. try doing that in an actual job. you'd not last long. code gen, libs, git, etc. use are universal. what i'd like to be testing via the exam is both the use of those kinds of tools, and how good you are at the "hard or unique bits" that can't be auto generated. if i got 10 people with a 100% solution, i'd be inclined to give the highest mark to the person that made best, or most, use of tools. once they leave uni that is going to be their life going forward! OTOH, i'd ban them for "critical thinking" topics like literature, etc.

@samueljohnson@mstdn.social @MarkHoltom@mastodonapp.uk an awful lot of Ireland's exports are software resellers taking advantage of some very targeted tax policies in Ireland and directed at the rest of the EU. Almost zero of that software is developed in Ireland, and thus doesn't really contribute much to the country or its citizens.

@WiteWulf@cyberplace.social Aussie steelmaking and oil refining. huge amounts of iron ore and crude mined in Oz, but... "Despite some interest in expanding capacity for energy security reasons, analysts consider building new refineries difficult to justify commercially, citing the high cost and long development time." plus given Oz is almost out of crude reserves, onshore refining to protect against global supply chains makes zero sense if... you rely on those same global supply chains to provide you with refinable crude! https://archive.ph/VXK18
