@_elena@mastodon.social my son's school is asking for permission to put photographs of him on social media and I've refused. It got me thinking about how suitable Mastodon would be for #schools. Do you know of any examples? Spoken to anyone who's looked into this?

Replying to
@trevdev@fosstodon.org @_elena@mastodon.social this would be just for the relevant parents. If the instance was not federated, and the school sent out an account setup request to each parent, it could be treated like they've used Twitter for in the past: invitation only. Mastodon is not really designed for privacy, so is it even possible to close post visibility off to just people with accounts on that instance?

Another one bites the dust.... Another #Microsoft Surface gets flashed with #LinuxMint 🥳 It's an old one (pro-4) and was really sluggish with Windows. It's nice and fast with #Linux now!

@Tutanota@mastodon.social that's a lot! Have you looked at Tech Crunch's site? They might be setting a record for the number of partners. Fun fact: 'legitimate interest' lets their partners track your location to within 500m 😲 @noybeu@mastodon.social when can we get rid of the legitimate interest bullshit loophole?

@jupiter_rowland @silverpill@mitra.social we are thinking of building a federated version of Facebook Groups, so people can leave Meta's cesspit. What you describe sounds ideal - minus the science fiction at the end (we'd only need cloning/moving within our app initially). And since it is new software then all the Mastodon problems you describe do not apply. All these features could be baked in from the start. We would need E2EE within the groups (so the host is blind) - just for an added challenge 😁

FFS I'm getting sick of the #AI bubble's lies. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3ek3gvdnj3o #OpenAI claimed on Tuesday that one of its models went rogue, escaped, and hacked a startup. And the #BBC reports it like fact 🤦🏼 I suspected it was a lie, to hype up another funding round, similar to Anthropic's lie about Mythos being 'too powerful'. And sure enough, they announced a $40bn funding round https://londondaily.com/openai-secures-40-billion-funding-reaches-300-billion-valuation two days later! Why are investors and the mainstream press so credulous? 😡 💲💲💲

And we shut down the surveillance settings in all their phones during the session 🤘

And a huge bonus for me was getting to meet Cory Doctorow in person!

The organisers were great: https://www.globaljustice.org.uk/ Thank you to Daisy for inviting us and helping on the day!

Find alternatives at https://www.rebeltechalliance.org/stopusingbigtech.html

or for a fun way to interrogate our site's content, choose 'Big Tech Alternatives' in the red options at the top of the chat box and chat with the bot about what alternatives are out there: https://mollyvsthemachines.com/home

@jupiter_rowland @silverpill@mitra.social Steams looks interesting as a base. I think the only thing missing would be the E2EE. What we're planning is something that would be used by any kind of community - a sports team, a band, an activist group, investigative journalists. They would have their own group, and everything within it would be private to them, but also there's a public newsfeed. E2EE so host is blind. Logged in you'd see which groups you are properly 'in', and those you just follow for news.

@bobkmertz@techhub.social @HolosSocial@mastodon.social oh wow the signal protocol? Perfection! I wonder if this design could be adapted for a Groups style app, with each group containing chats, events calendar and files - all E2EE? And then have a non-encrypted public news feed attached to each group? What happens when the volume of content goes very high and your device (mobile) runs out of space?
