Hi, I'm Nolan, #blind #accessibility advocate, #game/#web/#mobile developer, #cooperative enthusiast, and animal-lover from Austin, TX. Other interests include #gaming, smoking meat, and occasionally dabbling in music creation/sound design.

Looking forward to meeting and connecting with cool folks.

@PepperTheVixen I don't recall the exact incantations for this but I did it with sox before. Had an HDMI soundbar that none of the silence addons/techniques worked with. Wrote a script/systemd unit to generate just enough high-frequency noise just quietly enough that the soundbar stayed active and I couldn't hear the sound. Worked pretty well. I generated a silence.wav file and swapped out one of the app-provided ones, and just made it generate a loop live for the user systemd unit.

@ToniBarth This is now allegedly done, though there wasn't an accessible indication on crates.io's end that you were added as an owner so that may not have happened. If it didn't, please let me know and I'll try again.

@ToniBarth Ah, maybe that's what happened with the invite. NP, let me know when ready and I'll try again if I need to.

On my first Disco Elysium playthrough, but not the first I've watched, so I kind of knew what I was in for. Nevertheless mine has had a lot of material I haven't seen before. That said, if this isn't the kind of game you can fuck-up your way through, it's going to be a short one. I barely survived a heart attack by happenstance, only because I knew the mechanic to dodge it, and my character is slowly losing his mind to the tune of some amazing writing. But he's really fucking up his life choices, and often surprisingly that's precisely because I didn't have any sensible options to pick. So I'm sort of failing through this game and watching my character lose it precisely because I don't have the charsheet to even get the sensible options in the menu. Kind of blows my mind.

@zersiax@cupoftea.social @menelion@dragonscave.space @matt@toot.cafe So much this, and everything out there is piles and piles of complexity which I guess I could learn about if it was actually something I needed regularly but as a one-off it's more a waste of time than anything. I just integrated Android's Activity Recognition API into another project which, from what I remember of my research years back, involves lots of Google Play Services-specific RPC incantations for setting up the connection. Once that's done, I'm not going to need that knowledge again, and while the time I spent learning things for a one-off task is arguably not wasted, it's time I can never get back. That plus the brokenness of everything are probably my biggest struggles, and I can't imagine being new to this and eventually hitting those. Also, the speed at which Claude takes 2 multi-megabyte log files and constructs abstract shell pipelines to extract just what it needs is dizzying. That's something I gather sighted folks have always been able to do way more quickly by skimming a usually ANSI-color-coded log. Even if its logic and process makes perfect sense to me, I'm not capable of slinging enough awk and sed to point at a log and identify all app-specific activity around crashes or RPC failures between this and that timestamp. All that is to say, as someone who also knows how to do this, it feels like a larger hill to climb for blind folks because we never really had great accessible tooling for ourselves in the first place. Expecting someone to learn development and eventually grapple with a huge pile of logs or some multi-billion-dollar megacorp's bespoke pile of shit to do a thing feels like a larger ask than ever before. That said, I don't know where this leaves us. I don't know if it's just a matter of providing one set of specific language tooling, though. Also not a particularly big fan of the solution being bellowing at my tooling several times a day because it wrote War and Peace in the doc comments again...

@fireborn@dragonscave.space I'd be really interested in reading more about your phone-first workflow--what apps you use for coding/writing, etc. I've wanted something like that for a while now but haven't had the patience to smash my head against a brick wall for a while figuring it out, which you've obviously already done. :)

@prism@infosec.exchange Oh, didn't even realize there was a new one until you tipped me off to it, reading about it now. I'll probably hold off for a bit, I literally just got most of the old mod adapted to my Steam Deck and don't really want to redo the input mappings again just yet. Thanks for letting me know!

@prism@infosec.exchange @zersiax@cupoftea.social @menelion@dragonscave.space @matt@toot.cafe Another really good use case. Yes hooking that screen reader may be interesting to you, but even if you were like "Hey, I'm going to learn this so I can write the code good myself," you've what? Learned to disassemble and reverse-engineer code in one language, you've figured out one studio's or one engine's conventions for a single game, much of which likely isn't applicable in the sequel even if it does share an engine? Congratulations, you've learned the nichest thing ever that will benefit you in exactly one situation, the one you learned it for. If you had those skillsets as part of your background for other reasons then it's another story, but you need this specific skillset for exactly one task, then you're done. Glad to see more of these sorts of conversations. There's a lot I don't like about LLMs and the AI bubble in its current form, but I hope that when the dust settles, we've got enough left to get some decent accessibility mileage out of.

@JustinMac84@mastodon.social Have you seen https://www.ski.org/smith-kettlewell-technical-file/ A bit dated, but was what I found about 10 years ago when I looked into this, though I never got far enough in my projects where I was ready to leave the breadboard.

@JustinMac84@mastodon.social NP, you're right and I probably should have sent more direct links, I just thought the entire series of articles might be a good resource to have. Hope you can figure it out! I've wanted to get into electronics for a while but the whole not being able to solder things has been my biggest blocker. Even something like grove requires an initial solder.
