@badastro I have said it before: there is no probably about it. It is simple thermodynamics: sunlight is usable to do work; waste heat is not. We need to let the waste heat out. Stopping the usable energy getting in is completely misidentifying the problem.

Ich wollte ein Paket von UK nach Deutschland senden. Meine Addresse, die ü enthält, konnte nicht eingegeben werden... Das war DHL.

@mttaggart the article comments that people don't check the AI overview, but the quality of search results is degrading quickly, making it harder to check them. I frequently find that search result pages do not contain one of the words that I searched for, even when there are only 2 or 3, and putting terms in quotation marks no longer does anything.

@gimulnautti @ReggieHere because they have to pretend that there was something stopping them switching all these years. Otherwise you could infer that all the money they spent on licenses was pure waste (or successful lobbying).

@partim@social.tchncs.de I wish governments would understand that public transportation is infrastructure. It isn't meant to pay for itself directly. They don't charge for every trip on the Autobahn. Private companies are only 'competing' in the sense that you've put out a Monopoly board - ie. the legislative framework - and now they're playing your game. It isn't real competition.

@Di4na@hachyderm.io @bert_hubert@eupolicy.social you are implying is that the gap matters - that the Dutch tax agency absolutely requires functionality that is only offered by the cloud and "honestly only by AWS". But the Dutch tax agency is migrating email and calendars, and not to AWS.

@kevlin related to this, I think, is that Excel cannot display numbers to a certain number of significant figures; it only does to a certain number of decimal places.

It is an unfortunate coincidence that, just after a disease that causes brain fog swept the globe, a technology emerged that allows people to surrender their thought processes.

Is one of the reasons that people are so impressed by the AIs that they are no longer able to do better?

@_amol_@fosstodon.org what kind of moonshots are you thinking of? And why can EU governments not afford to fund them? Surely a government is better placed to fund something that runs at a loss than a company is? Government expenditure is never for-profit!

@failedLyndonLaRouchite@mas.to sorry for making assumptions. For your part, you could stop assuming that 1 single toot is the whole of Greenpeace's plastics plan. They do, in fact, have more, and it isn't hard to find.

@partim@social.tchncs.de but it's the government that sets up the competition, right? So the government couldn't have been completely behind them. Isn't the real question why the Italian government couldn't fix Trenitalia any other way than letting private companies in? I suppose we can see it as a pendulum. You have to allow privatisation so that people can see exactly how bad the private sector can be (eg. UK water companies), and then you can go back to state-owned, if you can afford to buy it back...
