To all the condescending support techs through the years who have told me I should just use Chrome instead of actually, y’know, helping me troubleshoot:

I have a lot of habits left over from the Carter-era energy crisis, but didn’t realize it until my kid was complaining about gas prices and I was like “Are you planning your errands for maximum efficiency? Could you pack your lunch and save a trip home?” Yeah, I’m a Fun Mom

@scalzi ‘…the cloud provider's API allows for destructive action without confirmation, it stores backups on the same volume as the source data, and “wiping a volume deletes all backups.”’ Just wow. So many weak links in that chain of events.

Hey y’all: that passport design is not mandatory, and it’s only planned to be available at the DC passport office. Read to the last paragraph; they’re counting on your headline-induced outrage for engagement. https://apnews.com/article/passport-trump-us-250th-birthday-df2f0f96e4fbcee89ae904a65af398f0

@bimmer TBF, two of my relatives did this out of their own brains, one in the 50s and one in the 80s. I assume the people who currently live in those houses wake up and curse my entire lineage every day.

@iFixit My favorite repair win wasn’t mine. Once I walked in to a women’s restroom in the engineering building at the University at Buffalo and a student was dismantling the soap dispenser that had been broken the whole time I worked there. She said she was just tired of it not working, so she fixed it. I hope she’s working for NASA or something now.

@jeff@noxon.cc Oh good! I can imagine the $5 Domino’s pizza from 1985, which was really good, instead of the modern one, which is not. Fortunately, it still only costs $5 in imaginary money!

@alicemcalicepants @afewbugs Mine caught two of them coming out of a space between the cabinet and the dishwasher maybe three years ago. He still watches that space sometimes. (We’ve long since plugged the hole in the siding outside where they were coming in.)

@nirak@hcommons.social I wish Microsoft would quit trying to *guess* what users want, but it’s been doing that since about the time it introduced the Ribbon in Word, so I should probably quit complaining about it now.

@Legit_Spaghetti My kid's school blocked all social media, so the kids would exchange memes through shared Google slides. A lot of them were really good.

@amerpie Back in the late 80s/early 90s one of my co-workers found a letter in Nature by someone who had conducted a casual experiment based on an article that said squirrels prefer food with the highest calorie content and the softest shell. The letter-writer determined that peanut M&Ms were the preferred food of their local squirrels. My co-worker was mad for months about this guy feeding M&Ms to squirrels.

@nirak@hcommons.social As he should. 🤣At the university where I work, any employee can park in the commuter lots free. They’re the furthest from the campus center, but it’s a fairly small campus. When I worked here before, ca. 2011, I was part-time and had to pay the same as a FT employee, even for those lots. It made me mad every morning. I was glad it had changed when I came back (I do pay for a non-commuter lot—but I can do that on a FT salary).

@alterelefant @ironcladlou @scalzi It does sound like the guy also made some basic security mistakes, like using an account with high-level privileges for low-level tasks. I’m sure there’s plenty of responsibility to go around. :-)

@manolo@indieweb.social @gedeonm@mastodon.social I’ve been watching ER since October. In the original run I quit at season 3 or 4, so it’s been interesting to see what happened after I left. A big one: cell phones! All of them were still using pagers at the beginning.

You might have heard already: Title II compliance is getting pushed back a year. (Assuming this is published on Monday.) #Accessibility

@colinpurrington@flipping.rocks Do wasps also use the ones with tubes that are meant for solitary bees? I bought one of those sheerly as decor (it was marketed as such) and something is living in it that likes to seal it up with dirt, like the wasps we use to call mud daubers.

@nirak@hcommons.social Ugh, that feels exploitative even in the ridiculous world of higher ed employee parking policies. A park-&-ride lot makes so much sense, for employees *and* students.

@MichaelTBacon@social.coop I’ve been looking for years for a gif of two horrible animals fighting that I can use for cases like this. Like a honey badger and a hyena, just ripping each other to shreds.
