Paging everyone on Fedi who has experience with putting Linux on unusual things! My old smartphone is a Huawei Honor 7A DUA-L22. I no longer use it, I have a different phone. I want to turn it into a Linux box. Is there any way to do that? I am not afraid to risk bricking the phone as it's borderline e-waste anyways. Google search didn't help. AI didn't help. @winter Also, unlike current stochastic parrots, all indications are that Dune's thinking machines were sapient. Surely not all of them were oppressors, even if the thing about them oppressing humanity was even true and not propaganda? I think identifying your social movement with the name of a genocide, even a fictional one, is... not good.

@cstross@wandering.shop @davidgerard@circumstances.run In my worldbuild, the Rationalist™️ faction built Roko's Basilisk for real, hoping that the whole interstellar community would tremble in fear and bow to their ideology to avoid damnation. Nobody cared. Especially the aliens for whom this is far outside their cultural sphere. And then another faction built Morton, a basilisk that instead targets those who would be spared by Roko's basilisk. As it turned out (and the latter one knew anyways, it was trolling) both were fake

@cstross@wandering.shop @davidgerard@circumstances.run The "good" factions in my worldbuild are still transhumanist but in a rather more pragmatic and less intrusive manner than the TESCREAL cultists. The hardline bioconservatives are the main antagonist faction-- and the TESCREAL faction *aligned with them*, because a future where the body and mind is free to modify and not policed is probably more dangerous to their ideology than one where such things are controlled.

I just want to let people be anthros and catgirls IRL, man. None of that forced optimization stuff. Honestly the main difference is that they aim for total objectivity of experience. They claim there is one way to live and they want to force it on everyone. I and my fellow travelers want to instead open more ways without forcing anyone through. So, total subjectivity.

In the distant future there will be entirely new forms of art beyond what we can imagine now. I doubt we will continue to idolize the 19th century forever.

Sure, maybe some artists, a tiny minority of them, can leverage their suffering into art. Most artists can't. I'm a writer and when I have a rough patch in life, I simply find I write absolutely nothing or write generic slop because anxiety and stress kill any inspiration. I would write so much, and higher-quality, if I was on UBI and needn't to worry about my or my friends' livelihood.
