New, exclusive, by me: LG to Ban Residential Proxy Providers from Smart TV Apps The home appliance giant LG Electronics USA said this week it plans to suspend any apps built for its smart TVs that turn one’s television into an always-on residential proxy node. The move comes less than a month after researchers found that more than 42 percent of games and other apps available for download on LG’s webOS store allow unknown third-parties to route their Internet traffic through a user’s TV. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2026/07/lg-to-ban-residential-proxies-from-smart-tv-apps/ #smarttv #lg #residentialproxies #spur #security

@hugo@social.treehouse.systems I’ll just take this opportunity to rant about ARIN policies. Over here in RIPE land where everyone gets a /29 all that sounds very reasonable. Then ARIN comes in and decides that folks who want more than a /48 should be paying extra. Artificial scarcity that guarantees folks will remain v4-brained.

My OLED TV is feeling a tad too organic tonight. The top edge started drooping like this (along the whole top, this is just a closeup) after the TV wasn’t used in a couple of weeks. Watching a couple of hours of TV fixed it up. It needed a content top-up?

One of the things you learn when working on your own routing stack is how resilient TCP/IP really is. Your code can be just completely fucked and things still mostly work.

Kunnes mennään jonkun raja-arvon yli jossa bisnes alkaa taas kärsiä ja joudutaan lanseeraamaan uudet hetkellisesti toimivat toimintatavat

Interesting to see what comes of Taalas. It seems like a completely realistic path to 1000x efficiency in LLMs.

I've argued before that the AI boom requires a specific goldilocks level of efficiency improvement to avoid a crash: too small and AI firms can't break even, too big and the bottom falls off of datacenter investments.

In that framing, 1000x might be too good? Nvidia hitmen will finish them off?

Turns out all of the outgoing unbound UDP packets had an invalid checksum. When Linux sends packets out the veth, it doesn’t calculate proper checksums for them. They are, after all, useless on the local system and if the packets ever leave, the NIC hardware will fill them in. But here I was, reading the packets directly in a userland process on the same system, not checking CHECKSUM_PARTIAL. My NAT recalculates checksums incrementally, assuming they’re correct to begin with. Boom.

Pretty wild investigative reporting from FT here (paywall).

Iran paid a Chinese company $36M for in-orbit delivery of a new spy sat and the use of the Chinese ground station network (so they can operate it even though the in-country ground stations have largely been destroyed).

FT analyzed public US Space Force tracking data of the satellite to determine that it was in the right place at the right time to image the U.S. bases that got hit shortly after each pass.

Slightly miffed about how Minisforum decided to spend their PCIe lanes on the N5 Pro.

It has two USB4 ports *and* an Oculink port *and* a PCIe 4.0 x4 slot. So that's where all the lanes went.

It also has three M.2 slots. Two of those are x1 and one is x2.

Maybe I'm a unique snowflake but NVMes are what I would've used the lanes on.

Round trip completed! Boat seems fine except for a battery on its last legs (12.1V after left overnight) and one screw missing on the control panel, causing it to resonate with certain engine rpms.

…this was a ”fun” day of debugging. My thoughts immediately went to NAT bugs (the unbound process is behind NAT44/NAT66), MTU issues, routing problems at our network core, even rate limiting after my extended testing. But no, it was nothing like that. Consistently, root servers worked, some other ones too, but most domain names would not resolve no matter what.

@harald@mementomori.social what would be the easiest fix for this on the top of my boat's cabin? it's the size of a small coin. I *think* this is just fiberglass underneath rather than a sandwich structure so I haven't lost sleep over moisture ingress so far, but of course if I patch it up that'll seal any moisture in potentially?

FT: “Forties Blend, a North Sea grade, soared close to $149 a barrel on Monday, above the highs reached on the eve of the 2008 financial crisis, according to LSEG data. This is an uncommonly large premium over the price of Brent crude futures, which are trading at about $100 a barrel, and reflects refiners’ desperation to secure supplies."

Can't say I understand how commodity futures work but if they're this detached from the ground truth I would imagine defaults are incoming

So one thing I'm building into the ISP is WireGuard access to your own virtual router we host. Should be a pretty good solution to the “safe surfing on public wifi” and “streaming outside the home without Netflix throwing a hissy fit" use cases, but obviously won't provide anonymity.
