Ne myös kuuntelevat koko ajan mikrofonilla huonetta ja käyttöehdoissa lukee, että on käyttäjän vastuulla informoida vieraita ym. siitä että heitä saatetaan kuunnella.

Käsittelen niitä työn puolesta ja ne käytännössä ovat telkkari ilman hevonpaskaominaisuuksia ja yleensä paneelilla joka ei pala niin äkkiä kiinni. Kääntöpuoli on kovempi hinta, mutta maksan sen mielenrauhasta.

@dusk@todon.eu I just love this type of advertising, it's so wonderfully unhinged from the reality. I've seen this one and many years later a local cellphone carrier had a similar one. In that one there was a man sitting on a pier, with his bare feet in water and a laptop in his lap. He was smiling and typing away. The camera zooms out and a slogan in the lines of "Mobile_Carrier_Name, we make remote work possible everywhere" shows up. The imagery was so absurd it has haunted me to this day.

I just wanted to share with ya'all the level of pure hate I have towards WhatsApp audio calls. Every time I get a work call from abroad with WhatsApp, I already start with a groan as I know it's going to be just one confusing misery. I'd take written conversation over that any time.

Oikeasti turhauttavinta on kun yrittää ostaa palvelua jonka olettaa olevan ammattilaisen tekemää ja saa jotain jota täytenä amatöörinäkin asiasta voisi tehdä paremmin. Vein työauton huoltoon. Olin sitä ennen jo katsonut diagnostiikasta että se ei tuota vikakoodia mutta siinä on aivan selkeästi esiintyvä vika. Kerroin tarkasti missä olosuhteissa vika ilmenee tiskillä, kaikki kirjattiin ylös. Huollon 2h tutkimisen jälkeen sain kuulla, että siinä ei ole vikakoodeja, veloitetaan vikakoodien lukumaksu. Mekaanikko oli kuulema ajanut auton suoraan sisälle ja käyttänyt sitä tyhjäkäynnillä siellä. Vika nimenomaan ilmenee kun kone on lämmin ja sillä on ajettu vähän matkaa tasaista nopeutta. Yritän purra kieleen etten ala useamman vuosikymmenen IT-alan karkaiseman sarkasmini kanssa liian teräväksi samalla kun käsi hapusi jo kännykkää, jotta olisin voinut näyttää vanhan kunnon Simpsonien "me ei yritetty mitään eikä se auttanut"-meemin.

The utter frustration with #Signal and them rejecting the concept of a phone with personal and work SIM, that also has personal and work version of various messengers. Telegram for example has no issues with this, but I see this is just closed as "not planned" when someone brings it up. Having to jump between accounts by logging in and out or having an extra device only for Signal feels extra lame when we finally got to a spot where I don't have to keep two phones on me all the time.

Project leading is one of wildly different things about other countries. In Finland I've learnt to have pretty extreme freedom at least in the IT. I tell how long what I'm going to do takes and inform the higher ups when I'm done and if there's something noteworthy about it. Other than that I'm free to work as I want. For about a month I've been working with a foreign customer and it's been a culture shock. Basically I get 2-3 phone calls a day, where I'm asked what I'm doing, what I did before and I'm expected to report current progress. It's really weird to me having to tell that I'm working on a long project where single parts of it take days, so if I'm called 3 hours later, I'm still doing the same thing. The problem resolving is also different. As a highly independent worker, I try to figure out a a solution to problems I encounter before asking for help. I prefer solutions that are better in the long run. But this multiple contacts a day management also comes with a strong preference to deal with every problem with the quickest possible solution, often ending with "pee in your pants during winter" solutions. A weird world to work in. #work #worklife

TV oli kuitenkin Ethernetin perässä koska ajatus joskus oli että ehkä älyominaisuuksista on hyötyä, mutta hyvin äkkiä tuli selväksi että kaikki sen appit on lagisia paskoja ja huonompia kuin mitä oikealla mediasoittimella, joten se vaan jäi verkkoon.

Tuossa on ollut ns. kirjoitus jo seinällä pitkän aikaa että firman työntekijät tullaan häivyttämään sitä mukaan kun alusta hiljalleen otetaan uuden omistajan tiimin alle. Ainoa ihmetys on että kesti näinkin pitkään. Olen näitä vastaavia tapauksia työelämässä nähnyt lukuisia, niin IT palvelutoimittajan näkökulmasta asiakkaiden tullessa ostetuksi että oman työpaikan tullessa ostetuksi.

I always thought being deeply disturbed by stuff like MS' copilot+ snapshotting your desktop and processing that. A lot of colleagues agreed. Then I talked with normies about it and people were mostly like "oh I'm sure it has a good reason to do it" or "I don't do anything criminal on ym computer, I don't mind". That apathy just shocks me and over the years I've noticed that's what the actual masses think of this stuff. That and considering anyone against it as stupid alarmists who see conspiracies everywhere. Even in stuff that has later been proven true. Still someone seems to be listening, as I've noted how much Apple for example always remembers to bang the "it's private and secure" drum with all their AI products.

During the COVID era there was apparently a huge shortage of Raspberry Pis when everyone using them commercially decided to pay brain-free prices over them. I saw RPi 2's and 3's hit $100+ on eBay. That was less than 6 months from a spot, where I donated like 50+ Raspberry pi 3s to Hacklab. Might've as well give them box of gold bullions.

I had someone cold-call me and they asked me of what I do. I give the brief of the various IT related services I provide. To this the caller goes "Oh so you're a nerd!" with a tone of voice that suggested it was supposed to be a next level joke. There's a lot of things you can call people to their faces. I however probably wouldn't go for something that's pretty widely used as a slur, especially dismissive one like that.

Sigh, looks like the Snap version of #freecad is still broken on #Ubuntu Earlier a KDE snap distro package broke it in a way it didn't even start any more. Now it starts but most work benches don't work and the UI is messed up. Reverting the KDE framework package kf6-core24 back to revision 36 fixes it again.

One was The Matrix, where they used period correct ssh exploit to hack into the power plant. In this one the hacking sequence ended with the stolen data appearing onto Microsoft Sticky Notes. I almost inhaled my drink.

I've always been fascinated how people think that becoming a movie quote soundboard makes them somehow sound competent. Today's special mention goes to "I don't want to hear excuses". Excuse are a valid thing. Sure, you can scream at a kid's face that their excuses are bad, but in general when an adult gives you a reasonable excuse for something that was not done, telling them you don't want to hear excuses does not make you seem like a cool person. It makes you seem like an ass with IQ limiter cranked all the way to the max. I get sometimes people would just want things to happen and it's inconvenient that they don't, but throwing a fit over it while ignoring the given facts is just lame.

Gotta love Broadcom. Several examples are now making circles, where ex. VMware users are getting contacts from them, telling they're having a win-back campaign with incredible offers. Just how stupid they think we are? When they started to squeeze blood from stone, having to move to something else cost time and money for a lot of companies. Small businesses and hobbyists got shafted even harder. Now that their customers have gone elsewhere, there's been increased interest, development and funding to a lot of options and the "but what if they cause horrible problems" FUD has been laid to rest. #vmware #it

@saruwine@mementomori.social Olin joskus Lassila-Tikanojalla IT-hommissa. Opin siellä että pakkaaja-autoja on oikeasti ihan hirveä määrä eri kokoisia juuri tämän takia. Siellä on semmoisia aivan valtavia etulastareita ja sitten suunnilleen minipakun kokoisia mitä ajetaan huoltotunneleita pitkin isommissa kaupungeissa kun sinne ei vaan yksinkertaisesti mahdu normaalikokoisella kuorma-autolla. Semmoinen perus-pakun kokoinen jäteauto on humoristisen näköinen isomman vieressä.
