People need to stop flying drones over active fire zones: "A temporary flight restriction (TFR) remains in place over the Spokane Area Fires. Yesterday, there were 26 reported UAS incursions into the fire area. These incursions significantly impact fire operations as aircraft managers could suspend aerial firefighting suppression operations which jeopardize firefighting crews and the public. All unauthorized UAS flights over wildfires will be reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and law enforcement agencies. Remember, if you fly, we can’t!" #Spokane #SpokaneFires

Joined in some silliness yesterday as a roving band of cyclists tried to carry bikes up every possible set of outdoor stairs in Spokane.

I got out yesterday to check out the bike-in campsite on Lake Spokane (the only one designated as such, as far as I am aware). Accessible on foot or bike, I did not stay overnight but it is in my plans for overnight bikepacking this season.

Well, it looks like Instapaper cutting off sending articles to Kindle in a free account is finally going to push me to jailbreaking my old Kindle. I''m looking at self-hosted @wallabag@fosstodon.org and KOreader to replace my offline reading of longer articles that has been broken since February.

If someone offers you a seat on a rocket ship, ask whether it's the kind the blows up before launch, or the kind that blows up on landing.

I have dipped into BSky a couple times in the past few days to see some of the Artemis discussion, and there are a lot of good scientists there, but to me it is as unbearable as Twitter was with ragebait politics and unhinged conspiracy theories mixed into everything. There is no shield from politics chatter these days, but at least on Mastodon I feel like I have more control and there is less engagement-driven ragebait.

@ai6yr @Rycaut @johannab Teslas (at least the ones I have seen and driven) do have a brake pedal, but you can set them to drive like a golf cart, where taking your foot completely off the "gas" pedal will bring it to a complete stop. Pressing the brake pedal will always engage the brakes AFAIK. I have a different brand EV and it can also do this (though I choose not to).

So what can you do with a radiosonde if you find one? They can be reprogrammed with custom firmware (like https://github.com/mikaelnousiainen/RS41ng) and repurposed for amateur radio use. I am not sure whether it is a cost effective option given the many cheap ESP32-based boards available now, but appealing to reuse and recycle the waste from disposable sensors going up hundreds of times a day. For now this one will sit as a trophy in my office though. #radiosonde #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

They're sending up a lot of weather balloons ahead of the #Artemis launch. Onshore winds at ground level, offshore at higher levels.

@mcc likewise, they could also build into the LLMs the ability to cite sources reliably and trace the origins of facts and text. Some of them try to do that, but in my experience they are terribly unreliable (as in the majority of cited sources either don't exist or are irrelevant to the topic at hand). "Citation needed" is a wikipedia cliché, but crucial for building human knowledge and broken (by intent as you say) for LLMs.

Apparently these tea bags are “third party certified as suitable for home composting outside of California.” It does make me wonder why they are not suitable inside California, though.

@MisuseCase @michaelgemar @sundogplanets this makes me more sad than the repeated misuse of Lord of the Rings. Tolkien's world is a deeply conservative one, with good kings who have the preordained right to rule over others, and various races who have their proper roles under them. I think some of the more aware techbros do channel that conservatism.
