æsthetically I prefer a much narrower spacing but I have realised that the wide gap Microsoft put between the icon and text makes it easier for your brain to separate them when trying to scan through the titles
had a nightmare where I was apparently in Paris on some kind of group visit (school trip?) and had to pay £400 for a train ticket, but the Monzo app had had a catastrophically terrible redesign where I spent hours trying to figure out how to move money from my savings

I don't know which fucking AI tool it is that generates the websites with the black backgrounds and rounded corner islands and heavy use of low contrast small size monospace font headings contrasting with high contrast normal size sans serif font other text but I want it to die

I got transparency working for Start Menu icons!! >:)
the trick is to set hbmpItem to HBMMENU_CALLBACK and then draw the icon yourself (with DrawIconEx) instead of using a bitmap!
I also fixed the spacing between the icon and text (b[0] = L' '; strcpy(b+1,a);… ^^;)
there's so little value in reading our feed on any of the websites, man…

Start Menu icons! For the Control Panel, anyway. I think there's something missing in WINE's shell icons handling to make icons for shortcuts show up. Also, for some reason MENUITEMINFO bitmaps don't have an associated mask, so there's no transparency on the icons.

getting Windows 2000 to install in QEMU took some trial and error, we eventually landed on this:

(I did find a relevant part of wineserver that can be modified so that closing the last user process won't kill the desktop. what's weird is that if I remove that, both closing the desktop and calling ExitWindows stop working, inexplicably? and so, funny solution!)

is it lovely? absolutely
is it peak Windows? I'm not sure. the animations on menus and tooltips are obnoxious, as is the IE click sound that plays every time you navigate a folder

I have discovered that the spacing of the text on Start Menu icons differs between at least these three Windows versions and now I will never know peace
