@foone@digipres.club I thought the main reason the laws are written like that is to teach people that legality is a significantly more advanced concept that supersedes morality, and that it is impossible to know if what you are doing is right or wrong without a lawyer to advise you on matters of conscience. It's designed so that when one asks why the courts are two-tiered and why the wealthy escape all accountability, they can admonish you as being far too foolish to even be able to understand.

By chance while running some math, I realised that 1.44MB floppies are exactly 1,440 KiB in size. (calculated via their CHS as 80*2*18*512 bytes = 1,474,560 B)

Which... okay, that's weird, Ki as in kibi is 1024. So... why then is "1.44MB" working out as equivalent to 1440KiB? Because 1440 is 1.44 times 1000, not 1024.

So, all that is to say... floppy disks are ACTUALLY measured in kilo kibi bytes. Which is a weird enough unit on its own, but MUCH weirder for the world to have standardized on.

I am wholly uninterested in putting in the effort to learn how to fit in with a world that would ABSOLUTELY never put in the same level of effort of learning how to accept me as I am.

"The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth". And the world the boomers (and those before them) have built is cold, uncaring, and absolutely needs to be razed to the ground.

If there is no place for people like me, then people like me will just have to build it ourselves.

Oh whoops, just realised I screwed up that two-toot message I said a few days ago, and failed to actually make the second one a reply to the first.

I am very good at computer.

@Sylvhem@eldritch.cafe @fionafokus@mystical.garden It kinda is, though. It predates the idea of people with cellphones that have Internet access, and it's multi-device support is... bad. Senders have to choose WHICH of the logged in devices a message goes to, and if they choose wrongly? You don't find out until you get home and realise someone message you while you were say, out at work. There's also no built-in cryptography, and the 3rd party hacks are super fragile and prone to randomly turning off silently.

@electrocutie@plush.city Huh, while it's pretty reasonable to assume all floppies are gonna be formatted FAT, that still isn't the case. Like, I remember messing around with a floppy-based Linux distro that formatted the floppy to ext2. (It also required superformatting the disk to 1.8MB instead) Some weirdos might've also been writing raw files straight to the disk to squeeze out those extra 16,896 bytes. (I might've even done that at some point, though I can't imagine why other than "because I can")
