I biked to the grocery store tonight and stocked up on cereal. Fun fact: broadly speaking, 1970s or earlier cereal is diabetic friendly, while 1980s and later cereal is not. Life Brand has twice as many carbs as Honeycombs. I can't eat a serving of Life Brand. Even some of the "bad" sweet cereal from the 70s is better than Life Brand. No wonder Mikey liked it.

The pros and cons of mass-produced food

Nothing gets a society better at food in big batches which travel well and have a long shelf life than a war. The twist is when factory food becomes the norm, not the wartime exception. This can lead to better sanitation standards... but can also devalue those same standards.

@JaxVent@lgbtqia.space @paulshryock@phpc.social @jschauma@mstdn.social Actually, I did both. I asked Copilot how to make it update automatically to today's date. Now I know more formulas and have a better design. The key is I didn't just go in blindly. I told it what I wanted and my best guess as to how to set it up. The assumption here seems to be that people just ask blindly and copy and paste.

@paulshryock@phpc.social @jschauma@mstdn.social Y' know? I just spent all afternoon talking to co-pilot about setting up a spreadsheet I'm working on. It helped me with formula options I didn't know about, and helped me get several of them optimized. You'll claim that's because I don't care about formulas, but I just don't have the entire suite of excel formulas memorized. Before I started doing this sort of work with co-pilot, I would have been editing this report every single day to update all the references. Now it's going to take me a couple of days to set up, and it'll be good for the entire test date range, which is a couple of months. It's fun to come up with knee-jerk comments, and I totally agree that sometimes people are using AI in stupid ways. Ways. It's kind of a variant of garbage in garbage out. But I'm really, really tired of people trying to claim that everything people do with AI is unnecessary and wrong. I literally have a multi-tab spreadsheet proving it's not.

Food and eating. It’s so central to culture, to enjoying life. If you are lucky enough to live in a place where food culture is celebrated, cherish it.

We keep getting told. Get a meal-oriented grocery service so you don’t have to go to the supermarket. Or take things a step further and get a meal service with all everything already made and ready for the microwave. Surely that’s more convenient, and convenience is everything.

But is it?

Is it actually better to make it yourself, or is the convenience of buying worth the cost? 🛠️📦

I'm excited to start Series 2 of my Substack, Make vs Buy. This time, I'm moving beyond websites to look at the pillars of domestic life: meals, clothing, and furniture. I'll also be looking at how emerging tech like 3D printing is reshaping the calculus for modern makers.

@RickiTarr@beige.party I used to work at a place where if management had actually done what was good for the company, they would have left their reports alone more. There were two times where managers left abruptly and weren't replaced immediately. We organized our own team meetings and helped each other out. The executives were shocked... but got another manager anyhow.

I gave eight AIs the same web development task of creating a simple one-page website, using only HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Was it worth it? Back when I was creating volunteer websites on evenings and weekends, it would take me a couple of weeks to finish a web page. Having a trustworthy AI tool available would cut that down to maybe a week, week and a half. Unfortunately, AI cannot help you get needed information from a volunteer coordinator with too many things to remember, so it can only help so much.

This is part of the Make vs Buy series, exploring whether it’s better to build things yourself or pay for ready-made solutions, and the conclusion of Series 1. In the next series, I’ll be looking at common household tasks, and when it’s best to buy a service, or do it yourself. But what about the technology angle? Oh, it's still there, from the importance of the internet in the DIY renaissance to the usefulness of 3D printing.

@jb@masto.hackers.town @evacide@hachyderm.io I do think a lot of it is "do you know how to city". Things like stepping aside when you stop on the sidewalk so you don't get in the way of everyone behind you. Things like not pointing and gawking, or loudly commenting on something local that is commonplace for people who live there but that you've never seen before, and announcing how strange you find it to the entire block. Most of the people I know who claim that cities are unfriendly tend to act as if all the other people there are not real.

Making has its non-niche moments. Handmade socks and sweaters, or mass produced socks and sweaters trying to imitate their handmade relatives, are still easy to find. It's also an easy make to get into: portable, lots of free patterns, loads of instructions on techniques online, and tools and materials which are relatively easy to obtain. It's a great introduction to slow fashion — plus you get to learn about where a lot of software coding logic comes from! https://makevbuy.substack.com/p/socks-and-sweaters

Someone yells at them for not stepping aside when they stop for something and they assume that they're going to get attacked. It's not about actual danger, but the perception of danger.

@FknHannu@zeroes.ca It's not about the technology, though. It's not about intelligence, either. I've had the exact same discussion with people who use their cars every day. They can't figure out how I get through a week without using a car for anything. Go back 100, even 50 years, and people were very happy with their modern, convenient lives. "I do fine without this new tech" is not the killer argument people think it is. What's more useful is to look at social and life improvements. Cars seemed like they were improving things, but it's pretty clear now they weren't a good choice. AI? Some things about it are good, but a lot of the time the general public is using it as a toy. I've seen good use cases for it in research and business, but not as many for personal use. It's definitely suffering from a hype problem.

@EricAlper@mastodon.social something I learned from software training real estate legal secretaries: the really big/expensive properties don't have mortgages. One showed me a transaction for a condo that cost 7 million dollars (and this was about 20 years ago, mind you) with no mortgage at all -- straight purchase, no borrowing. It was bought as part of a divorce settlement, for the ex-wife, who in return agreed to hand over her half of the couple's house ownership. The really expensive properties can often have far less paperwork than the cheaper ones that have a mortgage.

@JaxVent@lgbtqia.space @paulshryock@phpc.social @jschauma@mstdn.social 😂 And what do you think the built-in help system is made from? Yeah, I could have searched.... if I'd known what key words to search on. And that's still AI these days, even the "non-AI" results. As for my colleagues, they're still adding up long lists of numbers themselves instead of using the SUM formula. So I really don't have anyone to ask. Sorry, but it sounds like I actually know a bit more than you do on this one. For one thing, I know AI has been around for a lot longer than this century. I've always learned spreadsheets by saying "there has to be a way to do this", from the paper reference manuals of the 90s to search to today. The original claim was that anyone using AI didn't want to learn, didn't care how things actually worked. My point was it can be used as a learning and problem-solving tool. Again, that doesn't mean I don't research the negative/unethical sides of AI. And I do agree it's absolutely overhyped.

@violetmadder Of my dad hadn't been killed by a sudden heart attack, he had a friend who was going to get him a janitorial job at the high school I went to, and our family was THRILLED at the prospect. Union. Benefits. A pension. And even if the hours were not 9 to 5, they were steady. His education had been massively messed up by WWII, and then when he tried to get his Canadian high school diploma, the guidance counselor told him (incorrectly) he had the Canadian equivalent of a grade 4 education and would have to do so the years to grade 12. He spoke five languages, read non-fiction history books for enjoyment (in English, not the languages he'd been educated in), and taught me math I didn't learn in school until grade 10. In Germany, the second country he'd lived in, after the war, he skipped 5 grades. His teacher offered to go to the school board on my grandparents' behalf because they weren't fluent in German. People wind up in all sorts of positions for all sorts of reasons.

After several practice runs, I set up my projector against my self-healing cutting mat, and traced out my favourite t-shirt pattern into paper. Why didn't I keep my old version? Well, I did, but I'm two sizes smaller now (because I was seriously ill two years ago -- no, I'm not dieting or on drugs, it's just a side effect of recovery). I'm glad I worked through all the setup frustration when I didn't need to trace out any patterns immediately. I've got two other patterns I'll be tracing out in the near future, and feel a lot better about it now. #sewing

The conventional wisdom is that it’s easier, faster, and definitely more fashionable to buy clothing than to make them. Making clothes is a lonely, expensive activity, that takes lots of time and requires a specific, hard-won skill set.

This article explores some truths which question that conventional wisdom.

The hobby effect: consumerism dressed up as DIY You get interested in one, buy the tools, buy the materials, find something to make. Eventually, you finish the item. So now what? What can you do with this thing that you made for your hobby? Some hobby things wind up adorning a wall. Some get draped over the back of the sofa. Some get worn. But a lot of hobby items aren’t actually for anything. They’re just something cute that sits on top of your desk or an end table. Nothing wrong with making something decorative. But now you’ve made the decorative thing, and you still have free time and you still have a hobby. You also still have all the tools and leftover materials taking up space in your home. https://makevbuy.substack.com/p/the-hobby-effect
