convenience and ease (especially under capitalism) almost always come at the cost of external waste/extraction/exploitation and deskilling.
... something something "conservation of energy" something ...
for example ...
we have non-stick cookware. it makes cooking easier because you don't have to have the knowledge and skill to know how to use and maintain stainless steel or cast iron (or etc). people don't learn the skills to cook or maintain "forever cookware" anymore ... the cost for that ease and convenience is that non-stick pans are disposable and often made with "forever chemicals"
... so instead of learning to maintain a pan that will last hundreds of years and is functionally non-stick if you know how to use it, we taught generations to use a product that is pure waste and failed to teach them the skills to end the cycle of waste, or even know that it doesn't need to be wasteful like this.
some people still learn to use more robust and sustainable cookware, but it's become more of a "hobby" or "interest" rather than a cultural norm, or the domain of professionals.
.... now do "ai" ...
I have a new album out today on the fantastic label Nibble.
Available as a limited run cassette with individual covers, or as an infinite supply of digital downloads.
"community hub" is out now.
it's a dead kennedy's day for me, and it's feeling more relevant than ever.
"We're sorry, but you're no longer needed
Or wanted, or even cared about here
Machines can do a better job than you
And this is what you get for asking questions
The unions agree: "Sacrifices must be made"
Computers never go on strike
To save the working man
You've got to put him out to pasture"
(soup is good food, 1985)
so-called “ai” companies are replicating the power structure of organized christianity, specifically catholicism. the church believes that only the ordained can communicate with god, everyone else just needs to pray and ask the priest for anything else.
“ai” is attempting to put a gate up in front of computation. only the “ai” owners (priests) can change the program (talk to god directly). this is how they envision a new technocratic society.
like the church used illiteracy as a tool for domination, so does the “ai” industry. the less we all know about how our technological systems work, the more power concentrates in the “church” …
considering that a lot of them also believe they are creating a god (“agi”), this moment is less
industrial revolution and more spanish inquisition.
there are a few artists (music, visual, etc) that have influenced my practice and aesthetic sensibilities very deeply. sometimes it seems like anything i’m doing that feels new is just waiting for me to rediscover that it basically already exists in one of these few artist’s work lol
not that originality is that important to me tbh. but it does make me laugh when i put on an album that i loved 20 years ago and realize that my new idea is already on there. :)
more firmware updaters should say “let’s party” when finished
