@swan_tower@wandering.shop Of the many, many pieces of fiction I've ever read, the unpublishable "Embers", by Vathara, is my all-time favorite. It's fan-fiction, so copyright gets in the way of a proper book form of it, but I love the research and history that inspired the various plot points

@mjd In my case, my friend giving me a code review also showed me more tools I had in my belt in Python I didn't realize I had, and also helping me recontextualize decisions I had made in my approach that I might not have given much thought to while focusing on the next milestone

@ZachWeinersmith I still find it funny but exasperating how many studies are done by scientists surprised that some group of non-humans not stupid as previously thought. You'd think after finding such evidence enough times, we'd start to have a higher bar for the general case, so we wouldn't be as surprised each time, but anthropocentrism gonna do its thing, I guess

@webboy42@feral.cafe As to the latter point, look towards the end of "the man who does what it takes", and compare with the Hayao Miyazaki quote I had in mind before I opened the article: "The concept of portraying evil and then destroying it - I know this is considered mainstream, but I think it is rotten. This idea that whenever something evil happens someone particular can be blamed and punished for it, in life and in politics is hopeless."
