Replying to
@baldur@toot.cafe modern "cloud" software companies don't rely on IP protection, they use data lock-in and network effects to maintain their monopolies instead

@hannah the part of me that used to work in adtech knows exactly who the customers for this stuff are. there's been woo-woo like this in the "neuromarketing" space for years and years

Replying to
@regehr of course if you game that out in the long run nobody's writing prompts anymore and they're writing specs in some programming language instead

why does immersion usually get framed as subjectively being in a different environment but with the normal type of sensing and embodiment, when the point of art is usually to lose yourself

In the late soviet period the main way criticism of the social order was published was in science fiction. I used to think that was because of top-down censorship, but now I realize that's totally unnecessary. People are naturally afraid to think things that imply the reality they live in is unstable. The only way they're willing to approach it is by analogy.

I've been trained by LLM spam search results to turn my brain off whenever I see text that looks like it was written by an LLM. it's like banner blindness. I literally stop reading without realizing it

Replying to
@joe@f.duriansoftware.com the textbook solution to this is something like streaming latent dirichlet allocation, but just ranking ngrams by P(time window | ngram) (via bayes rule from P(ngram | time window) and P(ngram)) also works well

@poppyhaze@girlcock.club I thought it had to do with how intercalation works, so the battery is more like a sponge than a pitcher. the more full a sponge is the slower it sucks up water

Replying to
@mcc@mastodon.social the counter-argument to this is to say that in large parts of the country the people that would feel empowered by trump being president already feel empowered, and in the parts of the country where they're not already empowered (to the extent such places exist) they have to fight the state and local people that are also there on the ground

@mcc@mastodon.social right I think we're actually agreeing except I'm skeptical there would have actually been such a cap under Harris (Trump's monstrous immigration policy was an extension of Obama's monstrous immigration policy)
