@anon_opin yes to the ends, but no to the means. Even if it were open source or the source disclosed to the government I doubt the cost of the government giving it a meaningful audit would be bearable. I’d go for stricter requirements about expected behaviour of the software and mandatory personal penalties, including jail time, for directors for noncompliance.

@chris@m.objc.io I recently read Amusing Ourselves To Death. It contains a section on how TV was used to in education. The subject matter was chosen so that it would make compelling TV not because of its educational value. The framing of your question appears to have the same dynamic. Flipping the question so that the learning is the primary focus and not the technology might be more illuminating, e.g. ‘can LLMs be useful in improving learning outcomes?’

@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social the mindset hinted at with terms like ‘rockstar’ and ‘10x’ helped make unions a dirty word in tech thus keeping another force to challenge their power at bay. Tech workers seem incredibly willing to give away their power.

@mattiem@mastodon.social I’ve started reading it but I don’t think I’m going to make it to the end (I made it to “I’m sorry, Dave” which seems like the end of the intro). It makes assumptions about the direction AI is going to take and focuses on the hypothetical problems that might come from that. It doesn’t appear to even acknowledge the actual problems it has already created. The absence of a discussion on the real harms already caused means I struggle to take it seriously.
I’m yet to see someone that is bullish on AI engage with the ethical problems with it.

@chris@m.objc.io my point is that the way you’ve phrased the question is making the goal of learning subservient to the usage of LLMs. It implies that the usage of LLMs is what matters most rather than improving learning.

It wasn’t an entirely serious suggestion but useful food for thought all the same. (It was also UK based where we have a complicated relationship our national healthcare system.)
