Who remembers "Washington's Great #TacoTime Divide" from SeattleMet a few years ago? https://www.seattlemet.com/eat-and-drink/2023/01/taco-time-northwest-seattle-washington

Well, here is the latest state-of-play according to #OpenStreetMap and #Wikidata brand tags, mapped via @watmildon@en.osm.town:

Reposting some #30DayMapChallenge maps from local cartographer and geography professor Aquila Flower (@AquilaFlower@mapstodon.space). Sharing for the local #PNW and #BellinghamWA content!

1. The age of buildings in Bellingham, WA
2. Density of marine passenger traffic in the #SalishSea
3. The terrain of the #SalishSea basin if there were no water. Where is the coastline obvious, and where is it hard to spot at all?

Hey @awoodruff@mapstodon.space, has anyone made a Canadian equivalent to the "Daylight Saving Time Gripe Assistant Tool"? @awoodruff@observablehq.com

We finally wrote the final part of @stamen@vis.social's history of #OpenStreetMap (only four years after we wrote parts one and two, lol). Enjoy a #longread including many Stamen maps from over the past couple of decades, created by the amazing team of coworkers and alums I've had the pleasure of working with over the years.

For years I've been writing "Washington State" (all capitalized) when necessary to distinguish from "the other Washington", and while I am a linguistic relativist, I defer to consensus when I see it. I am shook to learn that the Chicago Manual of Style's latest edition now joins the AP Stylebook in recommending "Washington state" (no capitalization) instead.

"State" still applies when talking about the university (#WSU), or of course when using CamelCase for hashtags like #WashingtonState

On #BreakingNews days like today (#Russia coup?) if you miss the Twitter experience of following live news, here’s a protip: I eventually figured out that following the local feed at journa.host was a pretty good substitute for breaking news coverage: journa.host/public/local

@BobCollins@fosstodon.org As for whether the state legislature is good at budgeting, well, I'm curious if any legislatures are "good" at it? Congress is certainly terrible. And Washington (because of our constitutional ban on income tax) has a uniquely regressive tax code, so raising money for the state via property and sales taxes hurts those who need help the most. That's why I welcome this new source of revenue that will help us transition to a much fairer tax code.

Hey #WashingtonState and especially those in #WhatcomCounty: Call the legislative hotline today at 800-562-6000 in support of SB 6346, the Millionaires Tax. It has passed the Senate, but now needs a vote in the state House and Representative Alicia Rule of the 42nd district needs to hear we support it. Call today!

Which do you prefer, "data viz" or "dataviz"?

I long time ago (10 years!) I did some Google Trends analysis and found that "dataviz" was the most commonly-used way of writing the term, so I've been sticking to that all this time.

But today, I checked again and found that 10 years ago happened to be right around an inflection point and since then, "data viz" has taken over.

Time to update my writing style! cc @stamen@vis.social

I was interviewed in @WillametteWeek@mstdn.social about the @pop_vs_soda@subdued.social map I made a million years ago: https://www.wweek.com/drink/2024/04/18/do-you-say-pop-or-soda/

I guess it's about time to create a Mastodon account for that project...

From the interview with #Gerrymandering researcher Moon Duchin in the NYTimes: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/03/science/duchin-math-elections-gerrymandering.html

Duchin: "I think taking a hard look at the design of electoral systems could get us out of this nuclear moment."

NYT: What are the options?

Duchin: "One system I’m studying is proportional ranked choice voting, also known as the single transferable vote method, or S.T.V. In this scenario, you have multi-member districts using ranked choice."

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/nov/30/alabama-teenager-election-map-voting-rights

"The decision stunned “DD” – an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Alabama named Daniel DiDonato – who learned his map had been selected as he was preparing to leave for his 9.30am introduction to political science class.

“I was absolutely surprised,” he said in an interview. “Now, nearly 300,000 Alabamians will be voting under new district lines that I drew up at two in the morning in a dorm, a cramped dorm study room.”

Recent poll shows good support for #ProportionalRepresentation:

"48% of adults say they would support a system where states are required to assign seats in the U.S. House in proportion to the number of votes won statewide, while 19% are opposed. 32% of respondents said 'don’t know'"

@BobCollins@fosstodon.org Especially considering we've deeply underinvested in education in particular over the decades, and given that the federal government is looking like an increasingly unstable source of support, it's understandable that Washington voters expect more from the state government. Looking at our budget per capita compared to other states, we're on the high end, but in good company with other well-educated, good-quality-of-life states https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_budgets

@BobCollins@fosstodon.org Hi Bob, The "more than doubled" talking point is disingenuous since it doesn't account for population growth or inflation. It's more like 40% growth in a decade, taking those into account. So why did the budget grow? I think we're simply seeing a shift in priorities from a narrowly-divided government (& electorate) in the recent past to a more solidly blue state where the public and the legislature believe that gov't exists to provide services to the people. Which I agree with.
