RE: https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/115974050817264132 This is why I drew a line in the sand. The industry wants to turn the browser into a concierge between you and the web, interpreting and filtering your reality. They call it delegation - I call it a loss of agency. A browser should be a tool you wield, not something that makes decisions for you. @arstechnica@mastodon.social maybe worth mentioning us as an alternative ;)

And so it begins. Chrome is shipping a Prompt API - giving websites access to the browser's built-in LLM. This is the scope creep I wrote about... websites can now pass your page content, inputs and browsing context to an AI baked into the browser itself. https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/g/blink-dev/c/iR6R7-nQeHI/m/gb9zDAMqAwAJ?pli=1

Replying to
@USBTypeSteve@infosec.exchange @Qwant@mastodon.social yes - sorry for the hassle. 1.org was only ever meant as a temporary holdover (albeit you can still use it!), I’d been having talks with a lot of different companies over the last year but things move slow and then sometimes they move fast and all at once. It’s awful UX, always frustrated me when I have to do it as I know it looks terrible. Had a great run from 2018 → 2025 when it was just Bing! AI has had such a crazy effect on the search market.

@FrutigerAero00@mastodon.social @cygnathreadbare@retro.pizza *Sigh*... I don't know why @alternativeto@mas.to did me so dirty, this has absolutely *nothing* to do with Brave.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2013888

The library is already in the Firefox codebase (as are a million other open source libraries)...

I've extended it to block ads as well as trackers.

Replying to
@Auster1@mastodon.social A lot of users don't install a blocker. This takes them from ads everywhere to ads blocked on every page except plain text (contextual) results on one search page - which is also configurable. That's not a slippery slope, it's a massive reduction. If you use uBO (or similar), nothing changes for you. Search partnerships have funded Waterfox for over 13 years now... Donations don't sustain a one-person project (I've tried). How this could possible be a negative is beyond me 🤷‍♂️

@Auster1@mastodon.social If there isn't trust already after 15 years, nothing is really going to change that is it? It's your prerogative but fundamentally donations aren't enough to sustain me and people aren't willing to pay for the other services I've offered. Good for you if you're privileged enough to have enough of an income to work on OSS for free, but I don't have that luxury.
