@RikerGoogling@mas.to They are one of the most useful items in the galaxy. They can be used to dry you off when you're wet, they can keep you warm when it's cold, they can be tied into a bag in a pinch, they also give non-hitchhiker's the idea that you've got your act together, and they're more likely to lend you things when you need them. Really, every hoopy frood carries a towel.

I *am* still livid that Academy was cut short. We should have gotten *at least* two more years to follow our current cadets to their graduation.

@Phangurl A little late to the party, and I hope the other suggestions you've gotten have already helped a lot, but in case you're still looking for options: Obviously gotta recommend some Trek, Star Trek IV is always a mood booster for me. I will second the recommendations I've already seen for Hot Fuzz, Big Trouble in Little China, and The Princess Bride. I didn't see anyone recommend The Fifth Element, but it's so big and bright with a banger soundtrack. Instant mood boost for me.

@Phangurl@vmst.io Considering how often I've watched both movies, I'm surprised I didn't notice the similarity. I will have to find time to watch both movies again soon to consider it, for Science™ of course. For now, I'm scratching my itch by putting on The Fifth Element's soundtrack because I don't have sit and watch a movie spoons at the moment. I've watched the movie a lot, but I've listened to the sound track even more. It's so good.

@Phangurl@vmst.io the CD in question, I like the label art. I don't have the case anymore because I made the mistake of moving in with a guy a while back who was very anti "stuff" and so I compressed my physical media down to a binder and only saved some of the liner notes.

@Phangurl@vmst.io Also, I've heard it recommended that movie, TV, and video game soundtracks are good for background music when you're trying to be productive. They're usually designed to push a narrative or engage focus. I constantly live with music or a noise generator running in the background, even before I realized I was neurospicy.

@Phangurl@vmst.io I actually paused a moment, seeing you refer to her as Ukrainian. I pulled up her wiki and her heritage is very mixed: mother Russian, father Serbian, born in Kyiv. Having Serbian heritage myself, I've always associated her with that, but it sounds like she was largely raised by her mother in Russia and then the US. Regardless, she is amazing in the role and is a large part of why I enjoy the movie so much.

@scottsantens@hachyderm.io The frustrating thing is none of this is surprising. Giving the money directly to the people does two things:

It doesn't punish the unhoused people for the "sin" of being poor, and so those who base their personalities on being better than others have one less group to look down on.
The money comes out of budgets of departments and businesses that it replaces, and they don't want to lose it.

We know this solution solves a problem, but not the one those in charge want solved.

@futureisfoss We need to work on encouraging non-native speakers to stop using slop to "clean up" their writing. This has been an issue before slop became so frequently shoved into everything in the form of Grammarly. Using these slop tools often strips the writer's voice, and introduces incorrect info and bad translations into their works. Especially if they aren't familiar enough with the target language to correct it. I'd much rather a roughly written piece than slop polished. @jp @powRSS

@jp The solution I've seen in some open software circles is just put a hard "No AI" rule in place. If people hide it and get caught, they get thrown out when they're caught. Is it perfect? No. But it will let people know AI isn't welcome and drastically reduce the amount of slop that comes in. Some people will try anyway, and most of them will get caught because the quality of slop written content is usually obvious. @powRSS
