@brzuchal@phpc.social I agree there is a need here. I went a different way with my proposals after 8.6 goes out: Generics with Value Structs. Value Structs are CoW, so mutability is a function of the declaring scope.

RE: https://phpc.social/@phpc_tv/116851920030397745 I got used to the sound of my own voice on recordings a while ago. It’s still weird to see myself on video. Go check out PHPC.TV!

@upgrade I just finished the entire episode and I wanted to give you some feedback. I heard in your voice how much both of you enjoyed doing this episode and it was an interesting episode. It was a distinctly non-Upgrade episode and it wasn’t to my taste. Despite that, I would still encourage you to have a few episodes like this throughout the year. Every episode doesn’t have to be for everyone and getting the opportunity to listen to something different is good, even if at the end I decide that episode wasn’t for me. In summary, keep making content that you both enjoy making because it shows.

@Crell@phpc.social I want to agree with this, but it’s demonstrably not true, and there is no better proof of this than what I’ve been doing with PHP Internals lately. People are more receptive to criticism and new ideas when it is phrased politely, constructively, and delicately. AI is far better at this than me, in part due to it not having an ego. It can fairly assess other proposals and weigh differences between them. Sadly, AI-generated responses tend to be met with hostility when they are detected, even when they are correct. I suspect it is a form of uncanny valley combined with the person feeling devalued that the human didn’t spend the time to write the response themselves. Ironically, the wall of text from AI is a more complete and accurate answer in most contexts.

Replying to
@Crell@phpc.social You may want a sentient human, but you don’t want human sentiment attached. These “technical” discussions are anything but. We aren’t comparing implementations. We are evaluating each other’s children in the form of work product. I do not suggest we should take the human out of the equation completely, but writing a complete document with AI, sending that document to someone else, and letting them interrogate the document with AI is a good first step to allow people to compare proposals.

Replying to
@Crell@phpc.social The frequency at which fights break out and people walk away from Internals suggest that there is a problem. This community is passionate and being able to consider opposing proposals fairly is not historically one of their strengths. The fact that I felt the need to hide that I was working on a generics proposal that conflicts with another proposal says a lot about the community. If I added an Async proposal to my proposed roadmap, I would likely be excommunicated.

@zeriyoshi@phpc.social I started building a demo library showing off some of my proposals in action. It’s still a work in progress and rapidly maturing, but it is worth taking a look at for an example. https://github.com/betterpractice/nineline
