Can't Buy a Thrill by Steely Dan
https://album.link/i/1440496279
If you want an example of why this list of 1001 albums is biased toward white, male rock stars you just have to see that there are four Steely Dan albums on here (and a crappy Donald Fagan solo effort) and only two from Dolly Parton. How many middle of the road yacht rock albums by bands named after steam powered dildoes do you need in your life? Sod this, I'm listening to The Grass is Blue instead.
Planet Rock: The Album by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force
https://album.link/i/1288203472
Let’s start with the good stuff. This is a genre defining album that takes the icy electronic music of Kraftwerk (reproduced in the studio rather than sampled) and melds it with a danceable beat to create something genuinely new and fresh. It’s good to see that the members of Kraftwerk get individual writing credits on this, which earns this album a star.

Live in Japan by Deep Purple
https://album.link/i/65041635
As much as I like Deep Purple, I’m not really sure why this album is on the list. It’s notable for being a raw, live recording, straight from the mixing desk to a basic eight track recorder with no overdubs or post production polishing, so it should be as close to what the crowd of fans in Tokyo and Osaka heard on the night as it’s possible to get.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space by Spiritualized
https://album.link/i/1502476612
I’d been looking forward to this one since hearing Spacemen 3 on this list recently. This was effectively Jason Pierce’s solo project after his previous band broke up, featuring various musicians as the band evolved. His girlfriend at the time was keyboard player Kate Radley and they were in the middle of a relationship breakdown during the recording, which is reflected in several of the songs.

Ju Ju by Siouxsie & The Banshees

Interesting to compare and contrast this album with Talk, Talk, Talk by The Psychedelic Furs that the random generator gave me yesterday. Both albums are from 1981, both described as Post Punk but listening to them one after the other shows that they are very different in tone and feel.
Like a Prayer by Madonna
https://album.link/i/83448003
Madonna may have started the 80s as a carefree material girl but as the decade closed, she was thinking about faith and family. The title track, and the accompanying video in particular, caused a huge fuss at the time, but looking back on this now shows that this is actually from the (small c) conservative viewpoint of someone raised in the catholic faith with all of the associated iconography.
Talk Talk Talk by The Psychedelic Furs
https://album.link/gb/i/211437898
The first thing to say is that this band are neither psychedelic nor furry - what they are is a fairly standard post-punk/new wave band with some good wall of sound production by Steve Lillywhite and effective use of saxophone as a sort of droning background honk underneath Richard Butlers nasal vocals. That makes it sound worse than it is, but it did give me a bit of a Proustian rush for the early 80s.
Pacific Ocean Blue by Dennis Wilson
https://album.link/gb/i/457508820
Fun fact! Dennis Wilson was the only one of the Beach Boys who could surf! He was also the only one who got involved with Charles Manson, but that’s not quite so much fun.
