BTW, if anyone out there within the sound of this toot wants to share music via @veilamp@masto.hackers.town , DM me with either your share code or ask me for mine. Running it right now and it is glorious, and I'm always down to share media however possible!

The more I think about it, actually owning something, whether it be media of some sort, self-hosted tech stuff, some random physical object, or really just anything that doesn't have any additional rental strings attached -- no matter how one acquired said item -- is one of the most cyberpunk (or maybe just plain punk) things one can do in today's society.

It's about agency and seizing the means of one's own quality of life. And being able to do whatever the hell one wants to do with that thing whenever the hell one wants to do it, including repairing it or repurposing it -- or even giving it away to someone else.

Personal autonomy is punk as hell these days. I wish that weren't the case, but sadly it is.

You know, with all the high tech tools, gadgets, and gewgaws at our disposal these days, I still don't see how anyone functions without a trusty notebook and pen close to hand at all times. Could be any size and form factor, but there's just something about being able to dash off a quick note for later processing in one's own particular brand of chicken-scratch that can't be beat. I lose notes just as easily (if not easier) digitally as I do in a large notebook - but somehow, finding those lost thoughts is easier when I can flip through pages rather than scanning a file directory. Get yaself a good notebook and pen, people. You'll thank me.

@hagbard Ah, I was wondering when The Carrier Pigeons' new "Live In Berlin" album was going to drop. Sounds like it's imminent, yeah? :kekw:

And just as a reminder - if you prefer a slow-roll, old-skool, classic BBS experience, may I direct your attention to https://totentanz.club/ ?

Relive the olden days of the Internet as they were meant to be! Publish some articles! Make some comments! Wait for hours or days between responses!

This is the good stuff, people. :bec_wink:

Well, I am no in the process of removing a previous black mark from my cyberpunk/hacker membership card as I have now finally started watching Serial Experiments Lain nearly 30 years since it first aired.

I've seen or read pretty much all the other seminal media in that particular genre, but never that one for some reason. I know, I know, you're all shocked, awed, and saddened that it has taken me this long.

And let me say that it's not exactly an easy story to grok the first time, so I'm really trying to pay attention and understand what it's trying to say in the time that was 1998. Understanding the time in which it was written and first aired is a pretty important bit of context to understanding the story, I think.

"It's a good thing climate change is a hoax" he says to himself, as he trudges home through an inch of snow and 27F temperatures in the middle of feckin' April.

@jadedtwin@corteximplant.com @eniko@mastodon.gamedev.place I also think it has a lot to do with complacency - people who aren't "technical" enough want to be technical without learning how to be and more experienced technical people who have let their systems get too complex want someone to pawn the grunt work onto while they do the "real" work. One of the most frightening conversations I've had yet though happened today - I found out that my company is piloting this "AI First" garbage by not only having PMs and POs use AI to define the product requirements but that the designers are now "designing" by vibe-coding functional mockups which will invariably become the basis for the production front ends. It's all about "multiplying force" and yet also doing the same work with fewer actual humans that need to be paid and also need communication. It exposes the fact that a lot of "technical" people aren't in it for the love of the code or the job, they're just in it for the overblown salaries because, for better or worse even amidst all this job carnage, it's still where the money is.

@68000 Well, I was a G.I. Joe kid primarily, so I didn't have very many Transformers. Optimus was the only "big ticket" Transformer that I had. Not all my Joe stuff survived the years, but since I had so few transformers, most of them survived because they escaped notice. Robots in disguise indeed!

@68000 yup. I've lost some of my Joes over the years too. I had the luxury of being an only child, so my parents were loathe to separate with a lot of my childhood stuff unless I said it was okay. I only ever owned one M.A.S.K. toy, which I think I still have somewhere. I loved M.A.S.K. too, but they were too expensive and competed with my G.I. Joe habit. I will say that there's a burgeoning market in the makerspace for replacement parts for a lot of those toys. I needed to get some tail fins and canard fins for a couple of my Cobra jets and there are people that will print just about any piece that one might need, and some of 'em will even print up the stickers that go on the parts. The other thing is that those things don't last forever because they're plastic. I had to go through a bunch of my figures and open them up to replace the little rubber O-rings that hold them together. That was kind of a pain in the buttcheeks, I tell ya whut.

@adhdeanasl@beige.party This is your average capitalist's wet dream right here, and it kinda describes the US economy in a nutshell. We are all dominated by fees for everything. The irony is not lost on me that this was a Kroger product. :kekw:
