The Carney government seems to love to get applauded for standing up to Trump's authoritarianism while also passing legislation to take away Canadian freedoms and consolidate power in the hands of their cabinet ministers (and any future cabinet ministers). The surveillance state C-22, the identity verification online laws, the dismantling of environmental reviews and Indigenous consultations for major projects, losing an independent privacy commissioner, selling off airport operations to foreign investors instead of Canadian non-profits, now severely limiting labour rights. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/section-107-labour-code-hajdu-right-to-strike-9.7350619 #CdnPoli

Liberals looking to give minister explicit authority to end strikes: sources | CBC News

The Liberal government's marquee fall legislation is expected to strengthen a controversial section of the Labour Code, two senior government sources tell CBC News.

It's hard not to gloat a little with the family you met up with in downtown Toronto when they start complaining about traffic and parking, then ask how your trip was when you know the answer is: "it was great, we took the train."

I do think banning phones or certain apps in schools makes far more sense than requiring everybody to provide ID to access any part of the Internet (aka age verification).

Ontario gives a little more money to universities and finally lifts the tuition freeze (at below inflation rates), yay, universities can survive a little longer.

Ontario changes OSAP so that it is now mostly loans and less grants, oh no, a lot of people now won't be able to afford to go.

I will be doing my usual break from social media (other than LinkedIn because that's a work thing) for Lent, starting tomorrow.

Since I have some automatic deletion of posts, it might start to look like I have abandoned this account, but I will be back.

I find "Canada hasn't won a medal in figure skating in 8 years" funny because another way of saying that is "Canada didn't win any figure skating medals at just that one previous Olympics."

Grocery store bike parking being on a slight slope is a dangerous combination. Hold the bike from rolling away. Hold the cart from rolling away. Transfer items from the cart to the bike. I only have two hands. Uh-oh, another cyclist is trying to park and pushed my cart away without realizing it's a slope and almost hit a car.

Proton clearly had something in place to pick up on the cue that I (currently only a Mail Plus user) was doing some more exploration of Drive and has now sent me a discounted upgrade offer. I was thinking I'd likely wait for Black Friday but maybe I could push it faster...

Sounds like we're only a couple weeks away from getting Telus PureFibre Internet activated, pending verifying some details about the TV channel packages and some technical questions about app support and using the router in bridge mode. Well be going from 50 mbps down and 10mbps up DSL to 1500 down and 1000 up.

I definitely feel like Outlook's junk filtering has gotten a lot more aggressive in recent years. A good portion of things not from somebody in my address book ends up in junk. Even bulk mailings I signed up for end up in there if in the past I've deleted those messages too quickly.

The scarier cars to me when I'm on my bike approaching the trail crossing are not those that are clearly going way too fast to notice me. The scariest ones are those that are going slow enough to recognize the very heavily marked crossing and the car the other direction has already stopped and there are multiple people already starting to cross and suddenly that one car speeds up again before slamming on the brakes, then probably swore to themself about how that stupid cyclist came out of nowhere (that last part is just me guessing). Not that I'm speaking from today's experience or anything.

I know "vote with your wallet" has serious limits because it would take a lot of us boycotting the evil thing to offset just one billionaire supporting the evil thing and that usually isn't viable. But I'd suggest there is still significant benefit in trying to align your spending (and corollary, your data) with your values. You feel better when you aren't constantly feeling like you're contradicting your own sense of values. I'm sure I've seen research on this, especially around environmental things. Yes, most of the harm comes from a few giant corporations and you recycling is a drop in the bucket. But there is big personal wellbeing value in feeling like you're living out of your values instead of going against them. And the more you do the little things to line up with your values, the easier it is to do the big things.

I've now been in my office for over an hour and my eyes still feel a little irritated (not as bad as when fully outside). I am not very confident that the old building I work in with bad insulation and single pane windows is doing a great job keeping the smoke out.

Looks like the big #Drupal contrib module promised to get major security updates today is webform. https://www.drupal.org/sa-contrib-2026-175
Drupal.org

Webform - Critical - Remote Code Execution - SA-CONTRIB-2026-175

The Webform module allows site builders to create forms, collect submissions, and render submitted values in configurable formats. Webform does not sufficiently exclude certain format templates from token replacement. This can allow an attacker to submit data that is evaluated as template code when a submission is rendered. Trump cannot stand the concept of anybody having values or meaning in their lives other than grovelling at his feet and rushing to carry out his every whim. That makes religious leaders like the Pope clearly stating long held community values a major threat to him.

#Toronto people who bike, how hard would it be for me to come in on the train, rent a bike, and spend part of a day riding the Lakeshore? I saw somewhere online that it's about 9km, mostly flat, mostly detached from cars other than intersections, and with lots of places to stop for food or bathroom? I'm not a great cyclist. I'd probably need a cruiser like mine to be comfortable enough for a longer ride.

It's nice that @Waterfox@mastodon.social syncs with a Firefox account and I didn't have to set up everything again, but since Waterfox has its own adblocker and a warning if you install another one, I can't keep an adblocker in Firefox without getting that warning in Waterfox. Not a problem if I stick with Waterfox, and I might because my only real problem so far with it is buggy UI for the vertical tabs, but it is annoying if I go back and forth for a bit while trying it out.

I'm mostly cheering for the World team to win because it's got a Canadian (plus another injured), a couple former Raptors, a current Raptors coach, and some of the most fun players in the league.

But I'm also a little bit cheering for the US to lose, because obvious reasons in 2026.

So far I like the idea of Gander Social a lot more like I actually like using it, because of a couple of weird UI choices and the fact that it has only barely started to implement ATProto (it can follow Bluesky accounts, but the replies don't go through, and Bluesky can't follow Gander accounts - kinda like the relationship between Threads and the rest of the ActivityPub universe). https://tech.ryanrobinson.ca/2026/gander-social/

My recipe for an exhausting workday: second day in a row wearing a mask all day in an office to limit my smoke intake, arrive to discover all the sites are offline, a build runner that was barely moving for hours, a couple security patch deployments, and code freeze coming in a week to try to get through as much as I can before including a new issue raised by a colleague as something that should be a priority but which I currently have no idea how to do. #WebDev

I remember being explicitly taught some of this as a leader of some small group discussions many years ago: If somebody dominates the conversation one week, sit right beside them the next, so they don't get any eye contact to encourage them. If somebody never speaks, sit across from them so they feel like you're gently inviting them to speak.

The words I want to yell at Doug Ford right now would probably require a content warning on Mastodon. If his rich donors don't get to destroy Toronto with unsustainable transport, the rest of us "fringe" people who actually live in cities (ie most of the population) aren't allowed sustainable economically advantageous transport either. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/billy-bishop-jets-alto-high-speed-rail-9.7287885 #OnPoli

Ontario rethinking support for high-speed rail after feds reject Billy Bishop expansion: source | CBC News

The federal government's rejection of a plan to allow commercial jets at Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport is threatening a wedge between the Ford government and Ottawa — and potentially strengthening opposition to a major high-speed rail project.

I did the thing where I searched (Bing) my extremely common name. For years the top result was some photographer and usually there are some references to a footballer in there. Now it's a blogger about side hustles at the top, then still the footballer. Before it gets to me now is also a story about a different Ryan Robinson, in the same province as me, getting arrested for child pornography. So that's a fun development /sarcasm.
