Swiss-based musician - bass, guitar, keys, vocals of varying competencies. Played in Sydney in the 80s, Brisbane in the 90s, Myspace in the 00s + a rogue folk-acoustic set somewhere in there, nothing at all in the 10s!, and now active again. Several solo, collaborative and band activities locally and in Australia.

Avatar is a picture of me - a bald guy with a long white beard singing into a microphone.

Header image is a picture of a wall with several of my guitars and basses hanging on it.

My partner in crime was taking our grandkidling home on the bus and they noticed someone riding down the hill on a skateboard and juggling at the same time. As you do. They went along with the bus for a while and now I have two jobs. Teach the GK juggling, and then skateboarding - not sure they're ready for the skateboard just yet.

Also, shout out to everyone riding skateboards around and juggling. Your an inspiration to 4 year olds everywhere. 😜

Good humans are hard to find, especially those with a pronounced and prolonged public visibility. I loved this little hat-tip to Attenborough. 100 years is not nothing. Wow.

It's the local Pride march tomorrow and the forcast is for 37°C (99F). I'm actually suprised they haven't postponed it like in Paris. The kids are going but I will sit this one out, unfortunately. https://www.lausannepride.ch/

It's international women's day & I was thinking about posting some women musicians that were important for me. To start it off, it has to be Suzy Quatro.

There are probably obvious reasons why a young boy might like Suzy, but what stuck out was the attitude and I could never thank her enough for showing little me that women could do this rock shit too, and generally give the midlle finger to anyone that deserved it.

Fascinating to hear how people adapt to their physical constraints, convenience, or need to play multiple instruments. It's all good.

@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org @ambergrey@mastodon.social Oh, there's no shame in using a pick to play bass. Anyone fighting that battle can be safely ignored. Serve the music, as you know, and you're fine. Also you can't compare playing finger style on guitar and bass. What Beck and Holdsworth dare oing with fingers on guitars has no crossover.

Got out for a first proper ride for the year. Cheating a bit with this photo from last April, but it was a similarly gorgeous day, although the trees were less green.

@GuitarSith@fosstodon.org @ambergrey@mastodon.social I'm sure you're fine on bass. At least you understand how much they differ. I occasionally play guitar as well and I fear how actual guitarists might perceive that.

A bit of a BandCamp Friday shout out for a friend of mine who just put out a new album.

If you like a bit of synth-driven experimental, ambient music it's well worth a listen.

I've been slowly tinkering with The Mavis Grind project. Uncharacteristically, perhaps, I'm not sharing anything at the moment, but having fun searching for sounds and ideas. I've got a few (extremely) rough tracks recorded, and I think I'm finding the sound I want. I'm also having fun forcing myself to write with the bass - I'm a bass player but that is not how I traditionally write songs. Fun times!

As an example of my self-promotion skills, I decided to rerelease some old music on a Sunday night. Maybe time to boost that a little.
It's a bit of electronica/experimentation I made in the mid-2000s when I was isolated & without "real" instruments. Mostly.

Also just riding the BC Friday wave as this is free in any case. Although donations are always gratefully accepted 🙂. Honestly, just happy if someone listens and doesn't laugh.

It's weird how we view things in the world. Sometimes in infinite detail, and sometimes, not at all. Anyway, I'm going to bed. It's Friday tomorrow; that could be fun.

Someone (@revivalrecords @TheVinylApe@cupoftea.social mentioned The Sonics before, and I just stumbled on this KEXP live from 2015. Fuck, they must be pushing 70 and you'd never know. Some amazing cameos like Eddie Vedder, and all of them being totally humble in front of the OGs. Mind blown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFolqS24Y6U&list=RDBFolqS24Y6U&start_radio=1

Not sure I've ever shared a Beato video before but this interview with Maynard James Keenan and Mat Mitchell from Puscifer is a fascinating deepdive into how they work and create music. Quite impressive from a purely artisitc endevour but the technical perspective is next level.

It's BandCamp Friday and I'm terrible at self-promotion! Also, my band's 4-track is free, but if you want to throw a little coin our way we'll get all of it and spend it sensibly...

We need to get back into the studio soon, but this is still a standout track that's still fairly representive of where our sound is going.

@harriolkn@metalhead.club I've heard that before, but I realised I don't think I've ever seen a video clip of him. Pretty cool. But also, what a voice, what a talent. Gives me shivers every time I hear his voice. Live at Ciné gets a regular play around these parts.

@braydenwise@mastodon.sdf.org I love it, obviously. I found myself at Mavis Grind (an actual place) and saw something like this roadsign last year, and it was like - this is my new band/project. I had no idea what it was going to be, what I was going to do, so I just look at this image and make noise.

@AceArsenault@fosstodon.org Totally get the enjoyment of just building stuff you need, but the formfactor and functionality of this made it look like an interesting proposition for a lot of people. Production runs can be stressful. I recall people doing crowdfunding for things like this, thinking they're going to make 10s of them and then 1000s are interested - no longer the same level of fun.

@AceArsenault@fosstodon.org Watched the video and indeed, it made a lot of sense as bass player. I really appreciated that change of perspective to playing along the keys like going down the strings. It's a prototype at the moment, what's the plan, if there is one?

Louise Elliott. Another woman, not up front, but a total driving force on Sax for the Laughing Clowns. Eternally Yours is a masterpiece because she was there.

Something just made me think about this. A cover of Little Red Corvette by Stuart Zender's (Of Jamiroquai fame) Leroi. Not easy to find - this is just audio of questionable quality, but here it is.
