Seattle-based software/music/editing/otherstuff person. Not much for social media, bad at social networking, somehow even worse at building a personal brand or chasing "engagement." Views expressed are my own.

Formerly kind of somebody in the Apple universe. Once lost on Jeopardy. No, I have never held public office.

So, when I’m left to my own devices with guitar strings etc to change, I like to watch classic movies I’ve never seen (at least not seen in their entirety). Tonight it’s Fritz Lang’s “M” and it’s hard to believe it’s from 1931. So many things I’ve seen in movies and television my whole life seem to have started here.

@MTP@musicians.today @elsemusic@musician.social @Rob@musicians.today @GuitarSith@fosstodon.org @ambergrey@mastodon.social I maintain a couple "acoustic guitar player" fingernails (middle and ring), and I have no problem using them on bass—although I confess when I first tried it in my late teens I thought I might rip them off. It quickly became part of my "technique"—I can be walking along fingerstyle and suddenly a couple notes pop out with my nails to accent a turnaround or phrase. I use them on both up- and down-strokes—same on guitars. Of course, I use the same nails on guitar, lap steel, etc. etc. I tend to run stainless roundwounds on bass, so I destroy picks on bass pretty quickly. I tend to prefer the purple 1.14 Dunlop triangular Tortex picks—I can get a decent grip on them, turn to another corner when one wears down too far—but they don't last long either. Maybe two gigs or tracking sessions. I don't really care for the tone, but have used coins—and sometimes that tone is the right thing. My fave atm is a brass noveltry coin from Seattle's Olde Curiosity Shoppe. Another fave are 1960s-era Mexican five peso coin—for whatever reason I have a bunch of those.

@Rob@musicians.today @GuitarSith@fosstodon.org @ambergrey@mastodon.social I lean towards fingers on either guitar or bass—one less thing to lose/misplace/complain about, right?—but one uses whatever tools and techniques that serve the material. Full stop. And sometimes you mix things up! Recorded a thing a while ago using a thumbpick on fretless bass. Had a pick when I needed it and fingers when I needed them!

TIL #Firefox on #macOS plays monophonic MP3s only on the left channel.

I know Firefox is going to say “we just use the operating system capabilities, it’s not our fault” but I can’t find any other Mac apps that do this wrong, including things like the Finder’s Quick View.

@eyesquash@mastodon.world I'm not much of a Strat person either, but Hampton's early (first?) super strat is famous. Three humbuckers! Reversed neck! All the bling! https://youtu.be/eP0uMh_D9a8

@mrcopilot@mstdn.social I had to do this several years ago: I wound up going under the tub, taking apart the trap, and pushing it back up from below with an auger.

Today’s 70°F sunny weather in #Seattle really brought home something for me:

I miss winter.

@smallcircles I experience the fediverse a bit like riding public transit: often you meet interesting people, occasionally you meet hostile people, sometimes you meet people in crisis, and you have a nodding acquaintence with some folks almost every time you ride. Most people are buried in their phones. You hear bits of conversations (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot), the infrastructure is uneven and often confusing, and every now and again there is a flood, storm, fight, or someone pulling a weapon.

@GuitarSith Thanks to the manager for a band I was subbing with, for a while I was meeting more of the Vancouver old guard than the Seattle old guard (who, honestly, I've still only sporadically encountered). When grunge was a thing I was just a kid who was excited to be playing in a real blues band; I had virtually no awareness of the "Seattle scene" at that time. I met a few people here and there, did a few sessions here and there, etc., but was never very close to it. Still not.

@GuitarSith I've heard "Mama Let Him Play," but the name Jerry Doucette certainly has drifted by many times over the years, maybe first from folks associated with the old Vancouver Playboys. Sat in a backline rhythm section for a few of them at an outdoor gig in Vancouver when I was in my 20s—I assume all the Poppy Family/Terry Jacks/Chilliwack/Tom Northcott/Hydro-electric Streetcar/Vancouver Playboys people all knew/know each other to a degree.

@GuitarSith I’ve never played a double neck; a friend of a friend has a 6/12 Danelectro double neck and also notes neck dive. But he looks at it as having bought two pretty-OK guitars for less than they’d have cost separately. Ironically, probably the first electric guitar I saw in person was also a double neck. Larry Collins lived near my grandparents for a while, and I saw what I later realized was his Joe Maphis-style double neck Mosrite in the living room when I was about seven. I had no idea, and of course when I was old enough to know about the Collins Kids they’d moved quite a bit out of town.

@GuitarSith What was the thinking behind the original purchase? Performing? Maybe it was less expensive than buying two separate equivalent guitars?

I really need to work out how to monetize all the things I consider posting here but then reconsider.

Anyway. Do not believe a well-known technologist when he asserts "Adobe used to be a bastion of best practices for developers to follow."

@TheGreatLlama This is absolutely true: better to be too bright and tame it than not bright enough and try to compensate. That's my approach to most instruments, but particularly bass.

@TheGreatLlama Is this one yours? If so, how do you like it and what do you find it most useful for? I saw one of these at a music store in LA in I think 2019, and was absolutely intrigued by it, but the more I played it the more limited it seemed to get. At least under my hands, it seemed to be a terrific rhythm, accompniment, or ensemble/padding instrument, but eclipsed by either a 12-string or a standard six-string for most other purposes. I do concur with you about the tone. I find Taylors are often too sparkly and brittle, but down in the bariton range that can be an asset, and the two octave courses really added nice depth.

So, today in "Things I never thought I would post to social media:"

I cut a knuckle on my left hand while shaving.

No, I was not shaving my knuckles. A sneeze was involved.

Every link to github.com times out so can I just assume they've blacklisted me and get on with my life, or are they legitimately in a prolonged fail state?

@GuitarSith I may not be understanding: if the drums and original guitar sound good, how do the drums and bass sound solo'd? Maybe the issue isn't the guitar? [Edit: Ack, sorry, you answered all this earlier. Mastodon only chose to show me the entire thread after I replied. Before that, far as I could tell, the thread only had three items in it. Decentralization FTW.]

Oh, good: we've entered the time of year when I'm more likely to have my car windows rolled down, other people are more likely to have their car windows rolled down, and thus I'm subjected to a whole lot more second-hand pot smoke.

@Starfia@mastodon.social All I know is that when they finally integrated MP3 playback (once it was no longer patent-encumbered, I think) they made a big deal out of saying they were going to use OS-native playback for almost all media, so the “experience” would match users’ expectations.
