Hi there, my name is Andy, I'm from Belgium.
I spend most of my free time digitising and restoring classic video game magazines, mostly from the UK.
I've been doing this for over 20 years now and I'm here to share my passion for these magazines with others.
I love to read and talk about gaming memories from years gone by.

My main hobbies are gaming, both modern and retro gaming, as well as Japanese, South Korean and classic Hong Kong cinema.

Just called in sick as I feel awful today.
Barely able to eat anything and always cold despite being rolled up in like 6 layers of clothing and blankets.

So if I’m a bit quiet the coming days, I’m probably sleeping.

It's way too late for me, but I just couldn't stop playing Alan Wake 2.
About 6 hours in now.
Gonna try to keep it as vague as possible.
Started playing the other section now and it's just as creepy, but in a very different way.
Love how they tackle two very different psychological horror themes and nail both of them.

Came across the first Night Springs tv episode. The one with the waitress.
What the hell did I just play?! 😂

I love this game! 😅

@shadsy Oh absolutely! Feel free to use any and all of my scans for the project. That's what they are there for after all. 🙂 BTW, I didn't know that you were on here, so it's good to see another familiar face. 😊

@mollipen Oh wow. Jewel Master! I never see anyone talking about that game anymore and I’ve actually never seen a Japanese copy. If you have a little time, would you mind grabbing a picture of the front and back? I’m curious if it’s similar to the pal version.

@shadsy There's bunch more, some stuff that I've forgotten and other that isn't even worth brining up. But this was the point where I decided to not even bother with US magazines and their publishers anymore and solely focus on UK magazines. We always contacted the publisher back then to request permission to work on their classic magazine, wether that was publicly, or silent. UK publishers/editors and writers were so easy to talk to and I have nothing but praise for them.

@yesterzine@topspicy.social @davidaugust@mastodon.online Is that perhaps a Red Dwarf reference? I’ve only seen bits and pieces of it, although I’ve always wanted to watch it in full. Come to think of it, I want to rewatch Blake’s 7 as well as I remember being traumatised by the finale as a child. 😅

@shadsy After seeing that I wouldn't be able to work on the at all, I finally broke down and agreed, through a 3rd party that was our contact, that I would accept a small fee for my time and effort. He expected to sell a crazy number of digital issue at a rather high price and when that didn't pan out at all, they pretty much ended up costing us and I never saw a penny. 😂 Worst of all, since we worked with Dave, Steve Harris would not even talk to us anymore. Such a mess.

@shadsy So I did what I could, but I'm not really happy with them as I know I could have done them quite a bit better if I had them in my hands from start to finish. PS, I actually hardy ever debind issue. Only in some very extreme cases where I can't fix the wrapping of pages any other way. Hard to explain it all from start to finish, but I did write up this thing: https://www.outofprintarchive.com/articles/features/out-of-print/the_restoration_process.html Been a while since I did the full restoration thing though as that takes ages to go through.

@shadsy Yeah. It’s honestly a period that I’d rather forget. I got so excited to be able to bring back such an iconic magazine, despite not being able to put it out for free like all that others, but instead let the original owner sell copies on his site. But it just devolved to the point where I gave no fond memories of that whole ordeal at all. 😟

@shadsy The 3 issues should still be on a harddrive somewhere. I can look for them if you’d like. I sadly don’t have any physical copies. I paid for a set of them, not sure how many there were, but it certainly were 2or 3 dozen to begin with. But the seller wouldn’t ship overseas. So I sent the person in the US we worked with the money, he bought them and scanned a couple issues with a cheap scanner. He never actually sent the physical mags as promised.

@mollipen As expected, that looks so much better than the one we got here with the hand with a ring on each finger, pointing at a phoenix and shooting out water.

@dirkdierickx @mollipen Two of my favourite examples, which I do have are Alisia Dragoon and Empire of Steel. The difference between the Japanese artworks and what we got is just staggering.

@mollipen @dirkdierickx I got super lucky back in 2010, buying a bunch of Mega Drive games from a collector. Alisia Dragoon only was €42 when I look at my list. And, while it was really expensive at the time, it turned out to be an absolute bargain. I got Eliminate Down for €135, which now only has a bunch of counterfeits and those reissue carts on ebay that go for that or even more, while the 2 original copies I can see are just...wow...

@albinokid@nerdculture.de I’m so sorry to hear that. I lost my kitty last year due to cancer and it still hurts like hell thinking about her. I wish you strength during the coming weeks and months.
