It’s a scarlet letter? And people will try to kill the game? Fucking… good! Cry more. Every company that participates in Epic’s fucked up, dystopian version of the game development future should be immediately *buried* by players who want human art, not corporate slop. https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/epic-games-ceo-says-its-really-irresponsible-of-steam-to-make-studios-disclose-ai-use/

RE: @atax1a@infosec.exchange

“It’s just a tooool…” 🙄

A poorly maintained 1970s gas lawn mower is a tool.

A well maintained modern gas Toro is a tool.

An electric Ryobi is a tool.

Even a push clipper is a tool.

But the best thing for humanity and the world is to not have an American-style lawn at all.

With this version of the tech we’re talking about, the progression is the same. Until the tech exists without the exploitation (or somehow entirely reverts it), this will remain true.

“ai” is a godsdamned scourge.

Despite being the “Mac Guy” in virtually every room I walk into (all-in from 2001 on), I too grew up on MS Paint, autoexec.bat, COM, and IRQ ports. This monstrosity was literally one of the answers the Sears sales guy gave to my parents asking “But other than play games, what can you *do* with it?” I remember a picture of a train, in a lot of black and yellow.

RE: @stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social

Someone responds with how their model is so much better, missing the entire point that it’s only better at hiding this fundamental flaw of the technology from the user.

If this looks foolish, know that it’s exactly what you choose to do every time you use an LLM or similar tech.

For @gruber@mastodon.social
(who has probably gotten this a bunch by now) and anyone else who checks manually:

Tap and hold on the App Store icon, drag down to Updates, release.

Now, you still have to pull to refresh, but prior to 26.4 you had to tap/hold/release, pull to refresh, scroll past account info.

So, an improvement in number of taps to task.

RE: @stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social

Well that sucks. I do hope it gets better, then.

Also, do not use the word “writer” with someone who allows an LLM to affect their voice. Really if they’re using it at all besides perhaps punctuation.

You’re not writing if you’re not writing.

If developers want to march into the sea hand in hand with their Claude code, fine, but leave writers out of it.

Prompt Gemini: Link of Hyrule in the cave with the sword held aloft, facing the camera, hood up, and the old man behind him in the darkness between two impressively realistic flames. Link and the old man look realistic but exhausted, as if from many sleepless nights. Link is played by that sullen girl with the big eyes on Parks and Rec. The old man is played by Andy Dwyer, making the excited face from the meme. Edit: Her face should not be melting and we should not see outside the cave

And I hate them. Because they are inconsistent. This inconsistency is a far greater error in design than including them. Multiple different tiny gears instead of the same one always for Preferences (Settings 🙄), for example. And I hate them. Because they are best when only on *some* or *key* items, but then how do you decide which get a symbol and which don’t? And I hate them. Because the haphazard approach tells me things I don’t want to know about design stewardship at Apple in 2026. 2/

Don’t know if I’ve ever had as truly mixed feelings about a game as I do about Dragon Age: Veilguard.

Some honestly terrible writing and VO direction choices. Some really good ones, too. Visually beautiful. Like, gobsmackingly beautiful at times, if a little odd in art direction for some costumes.

Two of my favorite set pieces in any game.

Great opening, slow middle almost enough to kill it for me, absolute BANGER of an ending. (especially if you’ve played all the games)

Remember that scene in Austin Powers when Dr. Evil says “One Miiillion Dollars!” but it’s the 90s, so they laugh him out of the fucking room?

Yeah. Just thinking of that today.

@cstross@wandering.shop I actually think all of these should probably be required baseline world-building for any future zombie related books, movies, games etc. How will we suspend our disbelief without such obvious truths?!?! Like, fantasy worlds have… skies and like, gravity and blacksmiths or w/e, so zombie worlds need… all this. 😄
