It's so good to see this in the MIT Tech Review. Let's hope the message gets through. 🤞Big props to @timnitGebru@dair-community.social & @emilymbender@dair-community.social for putting such a fine point on things! "Instead of OpenAI being prosecuted for creating malware that hacked another company, press releases, news outlets, media personalities, and lawmakers refer to “rogue models” as if they acted on their own. Instead of researchers being questioned about their companies’ habit of plagiarizing academics’ work or using customer data to train models without consent, the public’s imagination is redirected to fears about what the future might hold upon the arrival of fictional superintelligent machines." https://www.technologyreview.com/2026/09/22/1144867/dont-be-fooled-summer-ai-hype/

Breathless claims about AGI and new capabilities fall apart pretty quickly under scrutiny.

@ifixcoinops@retro.social I smell business opportunity for a universal handle extender. I bet there would be a big market for such a thing among those with your unfortunate condition (speaking as someone who's mopped a lot of floors and never once thought "why is this handle so short?").

@afewbugs@social.coop Did you ever get an actual answer? I have one, though I'm also a bit of a hack. Mostly just make sure the plastic isn't all crispy from sitting in the sun and that whatever you're going to be screwing into is right behind the fascia so you don't end up warping the plastic when securing the blind. Apart from that, I don't thiink you should have any issues...if that's still helpful...

@varx@infosec.exchange I was having a hard time finding something more reputable, apart from the SBU FB page, which I was trying to avoid linking to here. @ifixcoinops@retro.social So a wooden handle, metal parts, with removable, washable mop head, of the variety all of us janitors* are familiar with (head made from loops of cotton rope, lasts forever). You'd have to change the way the mop head attaches to the handle (compared to the standard design) to allow for spinning the head inside the handle-cone thingy, but I can already imagine a pretty simple design. And make the (manly) bucket a separate item, so those of us who already have more buckets than space to put them in can also benefit from this excellent idea. Again, I smell business opportunity. Maybe if we call it an AI Mop some techbro VC will fund a startup... *"Caretaker" already has a distinct meaning in American English (think home health aide), and "custodian" only applies to janitors working in the K-12 school system, in my book. You do you, though.

...The starting point is to recognize that since Trump’s return to the White House, Iran, Venezuela and Cuba have been in a de facto state of war, which is an escalation of the multiple forms of hostility and aggression of past years. This is key to how all three nations should be judged. While the Left’s commitment to democracy needs to remain unquestionable and unwavering, in these cases primary responsibility for democracy’s somewhat uncertain prospects lies with the siege imposed by imperialist powers. No one other than James Madison said “Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is perhaps the most to be dreaded.”...

This is why we call it kayfabe - they are only pretending to be on opposite teams. The House voted 235-191 in favor of the bill released last week by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who has been trying for months to get an extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to President Donald Trump’s desk. https://www.commondreams.org/news/fisa-section-702-reauthorization This is not the first time the Dems have been screaming "fascist!" while voting to give the Pres even more power. It will not be the last.

@kashhill@mastodon.social Really frustrating article to read when the "experts" are still making statements like, "The moment a model notices..." An LLM doesn't notice anything, because noticing is a phenomenon of consciousness, not statistical text generators. And the suggestion for more frequent warnings is also woefully inadequate. Does anyone really think a few more warnings that LLMs are "sometimes incorrect" would have dissuaded these people? Come on...

@b_cavello @zkat I use my car for the things that I need a car to accomplish - driving people to appointments, picking up groceries, hauling tools to a job site, etc. I also use GenAI for the things I need GenAI to accomplish -- absolutely nothing. My approach to the two technologies is the same, which is why I begrudgingly use one and avoid the other one all together.

Here's the COVID Vaccine Paper the CDC Censored

"...The censored paper presents data on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines during the 2025-2026 season. The results suggest that, in the first few months after vaccination (September-December 2025), this year's vaccines were 53-55% effective against hospitalizations among the study's population of adults without immune compromise."

@donni@mastodon.social Trick question since both the people doing the destroying and the people not doing anything about it are all on the payroll of the same billionaires. You only think you're voting for one side or another, when in reality we have one corporate political party with a right and a "left" wing. US politics makes a lot more sense once you come to terms with that basic fact.

Sound familiar?

"Red Liberalism emerges not primarily from ideological confusion but from material conditions specific to the imperial core. In a context of fragmented labor organization, high levels of ideological incorporation, and extensive state capacity, the costs of revolutionary rupture appear prohibitive, while the incentives for institutional participation are significant.

"The result is a left formation that speaks the language of Marxism while operating within the boundaries of liberal political economy."
