I'm interested in #Linux, #FOSS, data storage/management systems (#btrfs, #gitAnnex, #git), unfucking our society and a bit of gaming (#planetside2, #trackmania, #guildwars2, #BeatSaber).

I help maintain #Nixpkgs/‍#NixOS.

I use #emacs. I ride a #brompton. I like trains. :omya_db:

I prefer the truth – even if it is inconvenient.

It's quite impressive how #SchildiRevenge - in its second published version – already surpasses #elementx in many regards – especially UI/UX.

The large feature set is probably helped quite a bit by the existing SDK work of ElementX. It also brings the mods of #SchildiChatNext and adaptions for #KotlinMultiplatform.

Oh, did I mention that you can use *the same app* on desktop? Yeah.

Promising contender for the first ever #Matrix client decent enough to actually recommend; exciting!

@nixos_org @nzbr While we're on the topic: work on minimal-bootstrap in #nixpkgs has actually been picked up again since this thesis was written (October 2025). Not only that but, as of a few hours ago, the PR implementing the last step of hooking it up to become the actual bootstrap stdenv in Nixpkgs has been merged! https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/479322 #fullsourcebootstrap #reproduciblebuilds #stage0 #minimalbootstrap #bootstrappablebuilds

@volt4ire Honestly fair. They're not paying for the code, they're paying for the convenience of not needing to compile it themselves. And compiling for those platforms is quite a challenge even for experienced wizards. Porting it in the first place is even harder. I see it fully justified to charge money for that.

@fdroidorg@floss.social I'd rather you didn't force your moral standards upon your users. Especially not with lazy excuses such as "protecting children" or "just set up your own F-droid repo". These completely fail to consider that not every user is a child and that what makes F-droid desirable is its status as an independent software distribution, not the technical details of the protocol. There already exists a mechanism to express moral preference filters for apps: anti-features. Use those instead.

@dk That's a good analogy. It even extends further: In order to make technological progress, we needed to abandon the incorrect model of our solar system. We would probably not have made it to the moon if we'd stuck to the ptolemaic model of our solar system. Similarly, in order to meaningfully advance our software ecosystem, we need to abandon code produced using poor software engineering practices – such as LLM codegen.

@networkexception@chaos.social On a more serious note: Those symptoms smell like memory errors; especially if it gets worse with vibrations. Have you tried re-seating it? Which make of RAM is it? Anectdata: My FW16 board was *very* picky about that. It would glitch out & crash and at some point not even boot if it had two sticks of the RAM I originally bought for it but did not have any such issues with the officially supported/tested Cruicial kit. Different board of course but worth looking into.

@fdroidorg@floss.social Speaking of morals: This actively diminishes user-agency for no good reason that I can think of. You are, of course, free to run your distribution whichever way you like. Forcing your morals onto us however makes it a kind of distro that does not respect informed choices of its users which I consider to be part of user freedom and which – up until today – I thought to be a specific moral goal of F-droid. I'd rather it stayed that way.

@aramya I can't personally offer much help directly but our local hackspace has a very healthy transfem community – quite a few of them on DIY HRT. I'd be *very* surprised if they would not be showered with help. https://www.chaos-darmstadt.de/ There is *probably* a NixOS meetup tomorrow evening and open chaos on tuesday. If it's more urgent than that, tell them to reach out via Matrix and I could perhaps even get something going today.

@zekjur Honestly, we should have that in the go builder by default. Perhaps even stdenv. We could then have a standard fakegit hook that returns the rev for the common rev checking commands which would work for any build process that does git integration via execve. Rev info for regular nixpkgs packages with non-flake input srcs would need to be locked along with version and src hash on update; ideally automatically and into a plain JSON file.

@leo Is a bicycle an option? Again region-specific but you might be able to get a "trash bicycle" for free or nearly free on the used market. It obviously won't be in great shape but even if it barely functions at all, it would already make you a *lot* more mobile. Look out for local charity programmes. Where I live, there's a self-help bicycle repair shop where they give out volunteer-refurbished bicycles to those in need. Similar programmes might exist for other basic necessities (too).

@leo I'd feared that to be the case..🫠 Are there alternative routes through the countryside perhaps? IME they're usually much nicer too.. https://brouter.de/brouter-web/ (and, by extension, OpenStreetMap) is a very useful tool for finding a route that works for you. It can break down your route by road type (speed limit etc.) and such, allowing you to re-route to avoid them.

@leo Hmm, is membership required? In my hackspace, there's an open day every week where anyone can come in to hack on things, use tools etc.. Also very hackspace-specific and might differ but, in ours, membership fees can be reduced significantly in exceptional situations (yours would qualify). It's worth talking to the people there. It's also likely somone in that community owns an unused power supply or knows where to get one. They might also have a broken one you could repair.

@chloecrimson @notthebee Does anyone with a proper interest in independence from fascist tech still use Reddit? (as in: browse, engage with others) Seems kinda like an odd place to hang out with that sort of preference. I'd have expected the majority of quality contributors to have left in mid 2023 – whether for #lemmy or for good. Though I wouldn't know given I'm included in that set ^^' I can recommend getting off Reddit regardless though; one of the best decisions in my life probably.

@selfprivacy@fedi.selfprivacy.org I don't know the details but I wouldn't be surprised if the reason the hardened kernels were dropped was lack of maintenance. If you're going to maintain the hardened kernel anyways, might as well do so upstream? Worth talking to the kernel maintainers either way I think; they might not even know that they're used this widely.

@chloecrimson @notthebee Do you mean knowledge as in "knowledgeable people are there and contribute new information" or historical information from before most knowledgeable people left? I too "use" Reddit for the latter purpose via my search engine but I don't really consider that to be me using Reddit as a platform. I just read the existing content (usually from many years ago) – through a proxy front-end no less. IME it's rare to come across a post without redacted comments these days.

@leona@social.infinitespace.dev In my Emacs I configured hunspell which is what e.g. Firefox uses for spellcheck and it works quite alright. It looks like there are plans to integrate a hunspell-compatible spellchecker into Helix directly: https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/discussions/14085
GitHub

How should spellchecking look in Helix? · helix-editor/helix · Discussion #14085

This is intended to be a more open-ended offshoot of #11660. Spellbook works and it's pretty quick. I've been running a very hacky change in my daily-driver branch for a while now. That patch spots...
