The hardest feeling is waking up knowing there is no food in our tent, sitting with your family in a heavy silence, exchanging looks as if words have died in your mouths, and no one dares to ask the heaviest question: what will we eat today? 💔😔 #Gaza #NoFood #Humanity #HelpGaza #StandWithGaza #Dignity #Survival #HumanitarianCrisis 👇👇👇👇👇 https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-rahafs-family-in-gazas-crisis/fb/o?lang=en_US

Great article about the loss of diversity induced by recommender systems (including LLMs): Temperature Zero for Culture: Why Everything Is Starting to Look the Same "A world that keeps removing the unlikely also removes the things that could have become the next likely. Ecologists have known this for a long time already and even priced it: they call it the insurance value of biodiversity, the standing reserve of rare species that cost energy and contribute nothing, until the climate shifts and one of them turns out to be what survives. A monoculture is efficient right up until the weather changes." https://laurenleek.substack.com/p/temperature-zero-for-culture-why Related: In my 2013 EYEO talk I used the Tower Of Babel as metaphor to talk about polyglot, diverse culture as key long-term survival strength (not punishment!) and to address the growing lack of diversity and rise of monocultures in creative coding fields, back then largely caused by centralization effects of popular frameworks (e.g. Processing, OpenFrameworks) and their social attractor effects restricting the practice and surrounding educational efforts to mostly a single family of (C-based) programming languages whilst completely disregarding other approaches, techniques and influences. My main argument was (and still is) that diversity of languages and programming approaches (functional, imperative, object-oriented, logic, declarative...) is an important factor for long-term cultural survival and robustness, something I've also been warning about being increasingly under threat by LLM-based coding. The latter is accelerating the monopolization of existing tools/frameworks, due to their over-representation in training sets and therefore offering more "stable", usable LLM solutions, leading to diversity collapse and making it increasingly hard for new contenders to establish themselves. Also wrote more about that previously... #Average #Diversity #Robustness #Survival #Culture #ProgLang #LLM

The concept of a #bugoutbag is a very common and popular one, when thinking about #survival and #preparedness, the first thing you should do is assess actual #risks. The likelihood of facing an actual #evacuation scenario is infinitesimal for anyone who doesn't live in a place with frequent natural #disasters and very small for those who do. Growing up on the East Coast, hurricane evacuations aren't unheard of. Once, while I was at college in PGH, there was a train derailment/chemical spill.

Of the three realistic risks, only 1 of them applies to non urban areas: widespread natural disaster.

For most people, in most probable #evacuation scenarios, that is going to mean one of three things:

  1. a hotel stay
  2. a family or friend visit
  3. an emergency shelter stay

In none of these cases will it be necessary to pack a #survival knife in a #bugoutbag. In some cases, it might not be wise, or even permitted.

And why are you talking about packing 5 identical bags, anyway?

In a flashlight forum I frequent, someone asked what #flashlights they should buy for their family members' #survival #preparedness #bugoutbags. My response was to ask why their family members weren't already carrying #EDC flashlights and backup batteries for them. What kind of knife? Why aren't you already carrying an EDC knife? And what do you think you are going to actually need to cut? Don't even bother thinking about bugging out before you think about bugging *in* and everyday carry.

Two years ago, today, I was diagnosed with cancer. Yikes! It's been a long journey, and I'm still working to get stronger every day. So, for today's #inkyDays drawing has a little attitude. #ink #drawing #art #cancer #survival

You can still register for the Ready and Resilient Hour, happening tonight at 8:00 p.m. Eastern and 5:00 p.m. Pacific. If you're looking to shed some of the #doomscrolling and the weight of the work week, we get together online once a month for a guided #practice in preparing for what the #2020s are serving up. It's like yoga, but but for your #survival kit. #posts #3goodthings #ReadyAndResilient #ThreeGoodThings #garden #grateful #lifeisgood #wednesdayvibes

Seventy-eight percent of older adults globally live where heat exceeds survivable thresholds. Millions of grandmothers who cannot sit in their own yards. That is not a policy abstraction. That is a sentence. The land is handing out the bill. https://twp.ai/4hr1bi #ClimateChange #HeatEmergency #ElderCare #EnvironmentalJustice #GlobalSouth #Survival #Trans #Queer #LGBTQIA+
