hi, i'm ascetic ツ i run a small (but growing) self-hosted stack and make random things, mostly around retro computing, privacy, classic games and IRC. lately: pagerom, which turns any website or feed into an NES, SNES, or game boy cart you can actually playmodembin, which is pastebin but with real modem audio decoding to text and live modem chatan IRC server that bridges every possible protocol (even email, phone, obsidian) into one hubthis instance (which is just me) running snac on a tiny vpsbeen on the internet way too long. say hi, especially if you're still on IRC in 2026. the rest lives at https://system64.computer #Introduction #SelfHosting #RetroComputing #IRC #Privacy

So my very dear and old BBS /#IRC era friends were talking about #LLM assisted coding tools, pros and cons this comment got made. Including the whole thing for context but what struck me was the last two set of lines. “I like what it can do well, like finding vaguely where a bug is likely to be or summarizing the context around some code. Automatically writing small scripts and config files for things. Being a second set of eyes on changes. Something to bounce design idea off.” And i recall in the 90s early 2000s how when we were on IRC all the time, when we were learning and developing our various skillsets( programming, network skills , things to make the internet “go”) , we would share and ask for help all the time, we were that group where we could be the second set of eyes, someone to bounce ideas off of and in the end we would all learn something more from one persons desire to learn something. In a time where we are more connected and always online more than ever before, we find ourselves so disconnected and without the time to communicate with our friends that we find it easier to check with an LLM than each other. I miss learning with my friends.

I saw this on a Finnish post, so let me reformulate it a bit and post it in English. Finnish universities 1996: "Here's an operating system we created for you. Here's a chat network we created you can use with the operating system." Finnish universities 2026: "We don't know how to replace Facebook for public communications." Learned helplessness. #Linux #IRC #Finland #Suomi

IMHO the biggest problem with #IRC was missing the native chat history and I kinda would like to have a simpler way to post screenshots etc. So I really like #IRCv3 🤩 I don't have a real, serious opinion on #Matrix, #MatrixProtocol, tho. I've heard bad things about it and I personally think it's either a little buggy or really confusing. I've tried to verify new device and despite doing the emoji thingy multiple times it still was shown as unverified, so I was forced to do account reset… Except this one problem it works for me, and communities I want to chat with are there, so I'm using it. But all of those protocols are just means to communicate with other people for me. I'm done with forcing myself to use something just because I think it is technically superior. People first, protocols next. But I would need really, really important people for me to use something closed-source, like Discord or something like this. I'm using #WhatsApp, because it's where all my family and friends are, and I managed to move only a few people to Signal. It's problematic because they also have their friends and families, and usually I'm their only one contact on #Signal, so over time they start forgetting about Signal and start messaging me on WhatsApp again… Network effect sucks 🤬 #messagers

Suora lainaus tänään kirjoittamastani tekstistä IRCstä :blob_sweat: 13:45 mustikkaso| kotona 13:45 mustikkaso| olipa kaoottinen meno 13:47 mustikkaso| ensin meinas Wolt kuski kompastua mun valkoiseen keppiini, sitten kauppakeskuksessa aikuinen ei väistänyt ja joku random lapsi juoksi täysiä ohitseni, en tiedä kuinka läheltä meni. Oli aika villi meno. Sitten ulkona nuoret aikuiset kävelivät melkein suoraan päin ja eivätkä väistäneet. Jouduin pysähtymään paikalleni että tajuaisivat kiertää... 13:47 mustikkaso| yleensä ei kauheen usein käy niin että yhdellä reissulla tulee MONTA tämmöstä tilannetta 13:47 mustikkaso| mut tänään jotenkin kasaantu kaikki tämmönen #kuurosokea #deafblind #blind #sokea #IRC #valkoinenkeppi #WhiteCane

Trying to stay socialized while using less and less bloated software, but a lot of IRC communities still feels as toxic as they were 15 years ago. Drop your queer, furry or any not-too-toxic #irc communities i could join here!

@cidney@mastodon.gamedev.place I enthusiastically recommend Nextcloud. I think it will have a lot of the features you're looking for. Talk = Discord/Slack. Not as many features but has voice and video calling, which is rare for selfhosted apps. Forum = Yep, it can do forums with the same users as all the other apps you install. Forms = Surveys! Office = Office suite with apps you'd expect I'm sure there are options for email blasts too. Every file made by each app is shareable. Sharing new betas or patches is super easy. And one advantage it has over almost every other app is you can talk to and interact with users who don't wish to make an account. No more dark web! It's not perfect and it's simplistic sometimes but I made one to replace a Discord and have been having a blast on it. #Nextcloud #discordalternatives  #discordmigration #discordisoverparty #matrixorg #irc

Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification. I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something? I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other. Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? I wanna see more Instant Messaging online in these spaces. #askFedi #texting #discord #xmpp #irc #matrix #element #instantMessaging #software

#OpenSource #TheLounge #IRC #SelfHosting #WebClient #NodeJS #Docker #TechNews #LinuxEasy
