#LLMs make poor #teachers because they were never #studemts.
#story time.
I'm part of a #team of #volunteer co-teachers teaching #Python to #HighSchool students remotely over Zoom. But that's only the #process. The goal is to grow other-subject teachers into #ComputerScience teachers by teaching them along with their students.
This week, our students are learning how to use the input() function to get information from the user. The project is to write a program that introduces itself as a #genie and asks the user for three #wishes, then prints out the wishes. Our classroom teacher was thinking how he could do it in a loop. Because he learned that when previous classes had studied #loops.
We discussed that this was one of the reasons that volunteers were expected to do the work we are assigning to students using only what the students had been taught. So we could help them better when they encountered problems.
And this right here is a big problem with LLMs as teachers. These models are trained, but they don't learn like we do. They were given all the #answers as part of their #training #data. When they cannot find an answer, they don't try to determine the answer by replicating the steps that students are taught — they make a #statistical #guess based on their training data.
Worse yet, they are incapable of actual learning from their #errors.
And "errors" is the correct term. "#Hallucinations" are a subset of errors that involve the #perception of nonexistent stimuli. #Techbros use this term because it sounds nice to them. Like, "I was high, and I had this awesome idea," instead of, "I'm just making shit up so I sound like I know what I'm doing." The latter is how they engage with the world, because they prioritize #confidence over #correctness. Which is a very bad look for a teacher.
There are legitimate uses for LLMs in #education, but none of them are as personal tutors.

in the early 70s i was in the early years of #highschool. by pure luck of timing, my year was the first or second to be part of the substantial overhaul of nsw secondary #education #syllabus & structure
most notably, ahead of us we had the School Certificate in 4th Form / Year 10 [the latter nomenclature also being part of the new paradigm], & the Higher School Certificate in Year 12. The hitherto Leaving Certificate became a historical artefact.
regarding the new syllabus, wrt #science, for Years 7 - 10 we could choose 2unit Geology or Biology, plus 2unit #Physics and #Chemistry, or... 4unit Multistrand Science [Physics + Chemistry + Geology or Biology]. i chose 4uMS, with the G option [our class for which being small as most kids picked B]
as part of the new syllabus we had newly published textbooks, & all the science ones were beaut... many friendly sketches pictorialising many of the concepts & formulae, which were a breath of fresh air compared to the old style
in the P+C part of the strand, we were taught something that became a central tenet of all the following decades of my life... logical thinking n The Scientific Method. for this, we were introduced to the fabulous, eternal... Martin The Martian, with his All Cylindrical Objects Burn...

I've never forgotten him
why this blather? i was ruminating some hours ago on the crap state of the world wrt abject shitfuckery from #RWNJs with their patent stupidity & malice, with their legions of brain-dead acolytes & believers. martin popped into my head. were these delusional fools never taught about martin, or equivalent? did they never learn any concept of rational thinking? i, along with my generational cohort, was given a fine inoculation against all the subsequent bullshit & conspiracy lies... why did the wheels fall off for all these later morons?

@MsDropbear42@blahaj.zone @smitjo@mastodon.au You were just a few years behind me in #highschool. I was in the last year of the Leaving certificate. But did abysmally, had to repeat (Could Do Better). There was a gap of a year between us and the next class. So I and every other person in town who was going to repeat, were all put together in one school (my exam results were equally abysmal, but in different subjects). Then off I went to Teachers College, where again there was a gap. A whole bunch of people enrolled, some as midlife crisis change of career. Fascinating bunch, whole range of ages.

Today is 1st June, the first day of Pride month. This is my first Pride story which I am sharing here.
I first came out as gay as a teenager during high school around 2013. It was a Catholic school, although we are quite moderate. I was very glad that my friends were very accepting. It was quite welcome (to my surprise), probably because of the moderate environment in school during that time. Some teachers knew about it and they just took it easy, even lightly joked about it sometimes. I had a very smooth experience in coming out as gay. It was my first Pride experience, although not necessarily during Pride month. Needless to say, I'm very happy to this day about my experience in it.
A lot of Indonesian teenagers who came out as gay are not as lucky as me. Most of them do not receive acceptance from their surroundings, especially if they live and study in conservative schools. Families severe ties with their children for coming out. Some kids get chased out for being who they are. These unfortunate cases usually include bullying and terror. This is why Pride matters.
Happy Pride month!
