On Thursday I watched this tarāpunga (NZ Red-billed Gull) on the edge of the ocean repeatedly doing a slow shuffle dance in the wet sand. It would shuffle its feet to make a wet puddle then stop and eat whatever little invertebrates rose to the surface. Then it would do its dance steps again. Definitely full marks for style and smarts. https://flic.kr/p/2stT4kF https://www.inaturalist.nz/observations/389180275 #birds #seagull #nz #beach #Chroicocephalus #gulls #AnimalBehaviour

The the gull master criminal who had rifled through our stuff, thrown my towel in a rock pool and emptied my bag while it was unattended. This is him checking I hadn't hidden anything once I gathered it all together again. You have to love them #gulls #wildlife

I love it when you find a paper that precisely answers a question we were thinking about today - how much like a natural egg does a dummy egg have to look like so the gull will accept it? Answer - they'll even accept a bright red cube if it's approximately egg size, which I can vouch for, having seen Herring gulls incubating vaguely spherical rocks, golf balls, and on one occasion, a head from a Barbie doll https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8599063/ #Gulls #Ornithology
