Someone on Lemmy asked if switching to local AI would make people hate it less, by reducing need for more datacenters and resource use. I want to share my reply b/c that's only ⅓ of the issues
3 problems
1. Being used poorly and mostly resulting in slop, or malicious/unethical/deadly uses, and psychosis
2. Being forced down the public's throat and put into places where it adds no value, job losses, quality drops, plagiarism
3. Datacenter/environmental concerns, part prices
Fuck you YouTube. They have just doubled the minimum watch time for creators before they can become eligible for monetization.
I've been trying to build my channel for over two years and the 4k barrier was already too high. Even with a 37k view video I wasn't able to scratch past 3000 hours. 8k feels nearly impossible.

I've been watching a friend go through some rough times. They have been dealing with chronic sickness and an unhealthy living environment, now at risk of losing their job that they were barely making it on as it was.
And I don't know how to help them. I don't have the ability to help, after being unemployed for over a year I'm broke too and not far behind them.

The rain hasn't really been a problem for me, but finding a swimmable body of water has. I had no idea the Pacific would be permanently cold. Are there any lakes or rivers around the Portland area that actually get warm enough to comfortably get into. Maybe a little beyond normal meteorological data, but figured I'd try.
