Notice how, when a company wants to show off how great its AI model is, it doesn't tell you how it's going to make your life better, easier, or how it's going to do anything generally good. Instead, the model is described in terms of coding ability, agentic workflows, and its plugins and hooks into tools like Salesforce, Slack, Canva, Figma, Airtable, Asana, Linear, and a host of other corporate tools. AI isn't being made for you.

Open source is cool because most people have like Facebook and WhatsApp on their phones and I've got Syncthing, LibreOffice, and a yt-dlp client because why not. Computers.

I need a software recommendation: my aunt has brought over an absolute ton of old photo albums going back to the early 1910s. I'd like to turn them into digital copies before they totally deteriorate. What can I use to do that? I don't own a scanner or anything on the hardware side. But I figure a good enough app might be able to get it done.

I've gone ahead and installed RomM to see if it can simplify and improve my game emulation experience. It's still scanning but it looks really nice so far. https://romm.app/ #FOSS #gaming #selfhosted

I hope that one of the Motorola devices that ends up supported by @GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social is a smaller one. I'm so tired of massive phones and it's getting really hard to find a decent small one.

Alright, never mind. It took less than 24 hours and I chickened out. I just saw a post about BMW pushing a Spider-Man ad to their car owners and it made me so upset that I'm sticking to GrapheneOS. We truly can't have nice things.

I've decided that I really want a Thinkpad X1 Carbon as a travel laptop. But I don't want to get one that's too old because I value battery life a lot. So I need to find a decent balance. But they're so lightweight that they're hard to resist. Framework 13 Pro seems nicer in a lot of ways but is way too expensive right now.

I just moved my gaming PC upstairs to my living room so that I can use it a bit more like a game console. Gaming at 4K on a 4K TV is genuinely nuts. Shame no one will ever be able to afford anything like this ever again, including me.

@pft@infosec.exchange Yeah, this is just so unfortunate. Spend $1000+ on a device and you can't even fully control it. And that's just the standard everywhere.

Saw the new Spider-Man movie with @BaSinghSe@infosec.exchange. Pretty good, but as a pro tip, bringing an infant to an opening day Marvel movie has the chance of ruining the experience for a lot of other people.

I haven't played Pokemon Sun since it came out. I just played it for ~3 hours on my phone and I forgot how fun it is. It'll be a lot better with an AYN Thor, though. 👀

Those Xteink ereaders have looked really appealing because apparently they're bootloader unlocked and so you can flash alternative FOSS firmware on them. But I already own a Kobo Clara BW so I'd find it a bit difficult to justify another ereader.

I wish I had an original Nintendo Switch that was a bit easier to software mod. I've got the second generation with the better battery life, which is fine, but it requires a hardware mod which I'm not at all up for doing myself.

I've missed wearing a little smart thing on my wrist, but all I ever use them for is phone notifications, alarms, and counting steps. And so I couldn't really justify buying something like a Pixel Watch or Galaxy Watch or whatever. So I started looking into alternatives. I ended up spending only about $50 on a Xiaomi Smart Band 10. It's a weird looking device compared to most others, which I like. Gets crazy 21 day battery life because it runs an RTOS instead of Android Wear. And the best part: it works with @gadgetbridge@social.anoxinon.de (with a bit of setup). I'm pretty happy with it so far.

@pft@infosec.exchange @gadgetbridge@social.anoxinon.de You have to use the app to set the watch up with an account and then scrape an API key from their service using a third-party tool provided in the Gadgetbridge instructions. Once you have that key, you uninstall the app and just use Gadgetbridge. Works totally offline from that point on. With the one exception for now being that if you hard reset the device, you need a new key. Either way, works without the app.

Hey there, it's us! Massive smartphone corporation! We made our phone even bigger and less friendly for real, functional human hands this year because we know you love when we do that. It's also $100 more expensive this year because that size isn't free. Still not enough room to fit a headphone jack, though.

Sometimes it's funny how wrong software gets things. Setting up this new phone, Google Contacts suggested that I add some people to my favorites for quick contact access. One of the four suggestions was my grandmother, who has been dead for four years. At the very least, Google should probably know that I haven't been texting her very much lately.
