With the whole SPLC thing, I was wondering if we can go back to having (mostly) apolitical communities to discuss about hobbies....then I realized that we are still living in crazy, uncertain times regardless, and sunk-cost fallacy is a thing so probably not for a while.

I think the worst part about the culture war was the mentality from both sides that everyone was the enemy unless proven otherwise, so you might as well pick the side that you find the least cringe/offensive. This ended up being disastrous in the long run because you had people who would otherwise be gamedevs, software developers, comic artists, cartoonists, etc end up being culture war grifters instead, and they probably only did that just to seek validation from their peers, and many (if not most or all) of them ended up being lolcows anyway, so it was pointless in the long run. They probably can't even go back to chasing their original dreams either because the cat's out of the bag and everything has been archived. This even affects people outside of content creation because it brought in the trend of adopting (or LARPing as) some niche political ideology like AnCap, NazBol, monarchist, etc and making that your entire Internet personality, and then just locking yourself into an echo-chamber, either by blocking people you disagree with or bullying the shit out of them. Yeah, I'm kind of guilty of this as well (minus the personal echo-chamber part), but I kind of regret it. Politics and philosophical discussions can be fun provided that you have an open mind, which is why I think older-forums did it better by having containment subforums for heated discussions, but ideologies should not be your entire personality. It will get you nowhere in life, outside of doing podcasts or writing Substack articles for a living. I don't know if we can ever go back to the way things were, especially given the sunk-cost fallacy is a thing and we are living in uncertain times anyway, but I really miss the days when politics and other heated discussions where in their own containment areas and people can just create and enjoy stuff online.

(I'd say "mostly" because I agree that it's not really possible to be 100% apolitical and that it is perfectly acceptable to talk about certain issues like Internet bills and whatnot.) Granted, some people would probably still consider you a traitor and people on the other side might hate you, but it's better than just swinging to the other side. You might even find a new niche audience that way as there are a growing number of people who are disillusioned with politics, especially the culture war.

I wish I could tell my 19 year old self that the culture war is mostly being funded by the SPLC and that every celebrity on all sides would eventually become lolcows so it's not worth wasting your time spectating on it. No. I was never on any movement, but I will admit that I wasted my time watching videos from all sides, and it did affect my performance in college. I was only drawn in because the Internet circles I was in were the ones most affected by it.

Why hasn't anyone forked TCRF yet? The content on the site is CC licensed so Xkeeper has no power to prevent redistribution of the content over there. That was my favorite wiki and it's time for an alternative run by someone who doesn't rangeban IPs because the HTTP referrals were from a site they don't like.

I have not seen him apologize for hijacking a calculator forum that wasn't his by working his way up to moderator status, only to delete their IRC channel and a thread on someone else's calculator language, all because he couldn't win an argument against someone. I don't care if he was a teenager at the time. Having extreme opinions is common for teens but even during my teenage years I would have never done anything like that. What about the apology for slandering Vaxry? Even if the behavior on the Hyprland Discord is locker-room like, it doesn't change the fact that Drew was lying about the "who/cares" victim as Vaxry has stated that the user didn't take their own pronouns seriously and was most likely a troll, and Drew knows this because it is clear that he read the blog post. He has a lot more apologizing to do and he needs to admit that he is wrong, and stop treating everyone with different opinions as threats to society.

@PurpCat@clubcyberia.co I was using HookTube (the YT proxy before invidious) at the time and the featured video section was littered with culture war shit, mostly from the alt-right and anti-SJW side. It also wasn't limited to just videos. Every community I was a part of or just lurked either had some SJW trying to hijack it or someone spamming threads with links about race-realism.

People Drew DeVault and XKeeper 100% deserve the KF treatment for cancelling people and subverting projects or in XKeeper's case preventing entire IP ranges from viewing a wiki because one user in said range visited a website they didn't like. Other than that, I do not care about what some e-celeb may have posted 10+ years ago.

Most likely, he is just very narcissistic, and is using woke leftism as a cover. Even before he started his blog and the projects he was known for, he was very infamous on calculator forums for hijacking communities and demanding that they cater to his narrow worldview. On Omnimaga, the forum he was most active on, he demanded that a MLP thread that he didn't have to participate in be locked and threatened to leave if it wasn't. He used the exact same tactic he uses now by pretending that everyone else shares the exact same opinion as him. Eventually, he got promoted to moderator status on the forum, only because of his programming skills and nothing else, and then abused his privilege by shutting down their IRC channel because he couldn't win an argument against someone, and deleting threads about projects he didn't liked. This was all back in 2011 (pre-culture war). He acted the exact same way he does know, just without the politics (though he did try to push "Enlightened Atheism" down everyone's throat).
