There's a digger at the bottom of our garden. (in the non-Australian sense, g'day) The Great On-Grid Project of 2026 progresses. The trench is nearly at our gate, where another Huge Hole will have to be dug for another junction. From there, the cable has to go through plastic ducting the last 30 metres, then up the hockey stick and into the meter box. Meantime I've had an email from the electricity supply company to ask me to take a meter reading....

  1. And here it is, gently spinning, but that's 500w of power coming in. A little while later, after I'd done all the fixing of the guys, the wind suddenly sprang up, and I had the satisfaction of seeing the unit gently furl, while putting 1kW of power into the batteries. The unit is quiet. It's a pleasure to work with such brilliant designs. 50 years of Hugh Piggott's experience is showing here. Oh, and he's a really lovely person, quiet and humble, in spite of his achievements.

  1. Here's the bearing unit and cabling at the top of the unit. Just before I somehow levered the hefty alternator onto the pole. The annual maintenance includes ensuring these parts are absolutely smeared in grease. Again, there are no closely-fitting ball bearings or other close-tolerance parts, and it all results in the reliability out neighbour has enjoyed for so long.

  1. The term "appropriate technology" might have been invented for Hugh. For example, he found that there was little need for complex commutators to feed power from the rotating head assembly to the wires, because what turns in one direction tends to turn in the other direction. So the wires are fed directly down the tower. When we took advantage of the unit being down to untangle the wires, I found perhaps six turns in the wires, after 4 or 5 years' operation.

  1. A small crisis of confidence when I realised I wasn't sure which direction the blades fitted onto the alternator. But then I noticed the rust staining on the blades and that was fine. These are held on by bars held by two nuts. Those bars straddle two adjacent blades, providing resilience if something Goes Wrong. It looks tatty, but this is a 20 year old unit, and all that rustiness is merely on the surface.

  1. Hugh actually found that the alternator had thrown one of its magnets. Who knows when that happened, but the units are so tough that, apart from an occasional ticking noise, it was still working well. It was ready last week, so was collected again from the pier yesterday, and as it happened, there was a weather window suitable for the re-erection today. Now Hugh's designs are used around the world, and, while this one was professionally built, many are self-built.

  1. (Have I kept count of the thread properly? Probably not.) Fast forward quite a lot of connecting, testing and fitting of the ancillaries, such as the large tail (it's heavy) and the nose cone as well as the cables at the bottom of the tower. All was looking well, so I raised it, and was happy when it flopped around into the wind. Back to the battery shed to release the electrical brake and watch the ammeter flicker into life.

What more proof do you need that aliens move among us than this on the BadgerCam last night? Any ideas what it can be? I've no idea, myself, but I do have a strong urge this morning to indulge in domestic-scale geo-forming with a mashed potato medium.

The Great Kitchen Floor Project of 2026. What a stupid thing to start. Well, I didn't just start. I started 4 times. The unevenness of the floor meant I had a terrible time trying to fit the boards in one plane, so I had to try the other. Eventually I found a technique that worked. But do you recall that stuck-on lino problem? It turns out that it was stuck on because there's a raised spot just there. Still quite a bit to do, but the back's broken, in more than one sense. I'm knackered. 2/...

It must have been heartbreaking being forced from your house and your farms, forced to small, uneconomic, wretched pieces of ground near the coast, where you'll depend on the largesse of the capitalists, working only if they gave you work, unable to make a living on the sour ground they abandoned you on, thinking back to the view you had all your life.

And one last look before heading home. I can't say we've forgotten how good this walk is, but it was delightful to do it again, especially in this weather, though we've known it in all weathers. It's a real gem and has consistently been well managed by the Culag Community Wood folk. Hope you enjoyed the walk with us today.

There is an alternative loop that's known as Ken's Path. Ken is someone local who had a lot to do with the original layout of the paths, which include, in another section of the estate, an all-abilities path, very suitable for wheelchairs. At the top of the loop, there's a small table, and this poignant plaque. Bless you Ken.

@neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk @IzzyOnDroid@floss.social That's a helpful articulation of the issue. It also validates a feeling I had when I found something that seemed to scratch an itch recently, but that encouraged such submissions, albeit with caveats. It struck me that there was a gap in the bridge of trust normally an essential in FOSS. I decided not even to test it.

Here is one house, quite a large one, of what must have been a thriving community. There was a mill in a burn nearby, and excellent soil for cultivation, apart from the grazing available for those wonderful black cattle. But notice the quality of the building even 200 years later. It wasn't poor people who lived here, and their economy must have been a good one. Yet greed robbed them of all this.

This to my is another poignant part of the walk. This area was cleared of the people who lived here in the savage Clearances of the 19th century, all in the name of "improvement." No-one has lived here in 150-200 years, but their cultivation beds are still clearly visible in the landscape. Even the name the "betters" used for these cultivation beds, "lazy beds" shows the contempt with which they treated people who thrived here.

Two-part post. The most important, a young man here in Assynt has been diagnosed with a very unfortunate disease, myelofibrosis. He's fine (he delivered several large gas cylinders to us today), & apparently it's manageable but it's not curable. So he's raising funds for the charity concerned about this disease, the Anthony Nolan Trust. Posting this for information, and in case this is something close to your own heart. https://www.justgiving.com/page/fergus-mackay-2 2/...

Part of the beauty of this walk is that it gives wonderful views of The Mountain, Quinag, the Milk Pail, Queen of Assynt hills*, the best mountain in Assynt and the second best on the planet** She's named the Milk Pail because the renowned black cattle of Assynt used to spend their summers on the mountain, gaining weight and producing milk for local on-site processing to cheese and butter. Plenty more Quinag pics coming up.

    • As Allan Macrae called her

** - as is widely acknowledged

The Great Kitchen Floor Project of 2026 starts. Just the sealing at the windows to complete The Great Kitchen Wall Lining Project of 2026, but I'll leave that for later. Ideally we'd move everything out to do this, but there's no room in the rest of the house, and I'm reluctant to move the kitchen units, but I think I have a cunning plan to deal with that. I'm already knackered this morning, so I'm having to try to do this slowly rather than my usual head down, charge, see-what-happens style,

@simon_brooke@mastodon.scot I don't even believe they were cash poor, in our area. At a clearance site dating to 1812, Staffordshire pottery was found, hardly the stuff of poor folk. They traded those cattle as far south as Falkirk. No, it was greed and power, creating the conditions that THEN allowed them to say "Look, they're poor," when the reality was that they had been impoverished.

#TechieStory All this talk of escaped sandboxing reminds me of the late 90s, setting up a SuSE server with dial-up internet. Can't recall the name of the service that did this. Anyway, I set up the process, but hadn't yet put in the ISP credentials, so the modem dialled the example number. Unfortunately, for some reason, the example number started with "999...." Cue QUICK disconnect, then dialling 999 myself to explain. It took a while to convince them of the reason for the unintended call.
