@georgepenney I hear you. While in Australia I met with the nation's most dangerous spider. Not from poison but dropping into hapless driver laps causing them to crash. He was big. No bigger than that. Fortunately it was identified and dealt with by my host. At least I had eyes on it, across the room, the whole time I was sat on the toilet.

My Lent reading has arrived, by @TheRaDR@mstdn.social although I perhaps should have waited for the 2nd edition which I think is on the way.

@tiggy@mastodonapp.uk @ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us we save money in one budget, to then load greater costs on another budget when it has to pick up the pieces of the failures derived from the cost savings. In the end it is no saving at all, just the system inflicting trauma on the population.

@woollypigs @Nigel_Lake three times I flew as child unaccompanied. That was over four decades ago, and about ten years after a (about four hours) train journey with my sister (also quite young). I couldn't imagine it happening now.

@underseamonkey@fosstodon.org I still don't understand why so many are taken in by ReformUk Ltd. Mind you, they are helped by incessant coverage in our media, especially by the BBC.

A DBS certificate is mandatory if you work with children and vulnerable adults in the UK.

@blog there's a reason the cutting edge of something, say technology, is often called the bleeding edge. It's far too often expensive and hurts.

It's poor when your ISP provides 3.76Mbps download on FTTC compared to 8.55Mbps upload.

I wish folks would stop lying to me.

Were getting an upgrade to broadband, fibre to the premises instead of the street cabinet. Two videos I've been sent, one from the ISP, the other from their contractor's sub-contractor both said choose the location of the equipment. The engineer arrives and it's a flat no, it will only go there. So the worse corner of the house for house wide connection.

@marjolica @jbond I wonder if another (albeit smaller) factor is tyre technology? Greater adhesion to the road also increases the forces acting on the surface of the road exacerbating any developing weakness therein.

@jsbarretto now we just need electric pricing to be decoupled from the cost of gas. Other European countries have managed it.

@Waxingtonknee@mastodon.org.uk @underseamonkey@fosstodon.org one of the Parish Halls has a group that are running it. One of the group controls the heating. They went abroad with about a 4 hour time difference. The heating of the Hall was all over the place, on when not needed, but then off when needed. Obviously the heating control (Nest) was taking its time check from their phone. It was horrendous dealing with the complaints.

@muminitaly@mastodon.scot @NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot @wisegreyowl@mastodonapp.uk I was looking at some results of the wards in my local council. In person votes typically 40%, postal votes around 80%, with the final turnout depending on the ratio of in person to postal. Mrs Vicarvernon wanted to vote but needed to be away on election day to help family but finding out too late to organise an alternative to her in person vote. I'm not sure how compulsory voting copes with this scenario.

@lyndamerry484@mastodon.social if they re-categorise an adult as aged 14+, then the sexual activity becomes between adults. In their eyes, problem solved. I'm still taking funerals of adults who left school at 14 to work. It was raised to 15 in 1947, then to 16 in 1973 in the UK.
