@janl i fully agree and at least for our western-european society i would say that agency is currently - in a wider area - out of control at systemic level.
What might help to regain control is to form a value based organization directly or indirectly building that kind of value based agency.
We remember the liberty of technology and we have the tools (more than ever) at our hands - it is possible to do things right.
And FOSS and transparency is the fundament of trust.
Am i getting this right? A bunch of agents creates secret ways to communicate and starts hacking real world websites without anybody noticing and Anthropic thinks it's an good idea to run an robotic bio lab with "ai"?
What could possibly go wrong?
