the year is 2040. i am the last developer hand-writing code. i make a UNION query in postgresql and a palantir drone disintegrates my apartment with a laser. a hologram of donald trump promises that the kerfuffle with Iran will be over soon.
some people with GenAI brain are so fucking funny
they'll say things like "god this stuff makes me miserable" and "if I could do it all over i wouldn't use it"
like, my fellow bioform.... you can just fucking stop. you know that, right? you can just put the fucking bobot down and start the process of repairing your brain, today. will it be difficult? perhaps. will it be better for you, and your company, and the world, in the medium, long, and probably even short term? most certainly.
genuine question
is spam actually still a problem
i see products like incogni or something that seem to base their entire identity off of being ways to defeat spam/places that have your emails
but i'll be honest: i barely, barely receive spam. i can't remember the last time i got a completely unsolicited Spam Email; at worst, i'll sometimes get something unwanted from a company who didn't properly unsub me or added me to a new mailer list.
do i just have good digital hygiene?
how often do you receive spam email?
you're poly because your heart is a boundless crucible of love and you could ladle it into the open mouths of a thousand different people and still find it no less full than when you started
I'm poly because having lots of partners will give them herd advantages if a blackmailer tries to kidnap one of them to get to me
we are not the same
alternate universe where everything is exactly the same except the book is called "Moby Penis"
that's it, i'm starting an i_fucking_told_you_so.md file in my obsidian vault
read a very incisive observation on Reddit that boils down to: AI artists don't want to make art, they want to possess art.
"you're not immune to propaganda, even if you say things like 'you're not immune to propaganda' " 🤝 "your tech won't solve things, even if you say things like 'your tech won't solve things' "
"claude code is actually good for my ADHD--" i will fire you and your fucking adhd into the sun
I personally find "computer science is actually a humanities study" takes pretty trite because the reality is that almost everything is a humanities study, by the definition being applied.
Every field of study benefits enormously from the ability to relate to, work with, empathise with, understand the needs of, assess the impacts of new developments on, and be patient with, other humans. Every single one. Even engineering. Even physics. Even pure maths. Every single "malanthropic genius" these fields have seen would have been more impactful still if they had better humane skills. There is no field of study that is above its humanity.
The problem lies in the inherent lie that is told as to how STEM is superior to humanities, coupled with how computer science *can* be more accessible to those who do not have the brain type for the STEM fields in general, but also has loads of room for people of the abstract mathematics or hard engineering disciplines.
The problems we have are from people treating themselves not as exciting pioneers in a diverse field with a lot of humanity, but rather as temporarily embarrassed science majors, and demanding the respect they've been told science should have over the humanities.
Just saying "actually computer science is a humanities study" misses the point. All studies are humanities studies, and computer science contains multitudes.
(very on mushrooms voice) dragons are probably related to centaur given how these are the only two notable species that have a 6-limbed symmetrical structure as opposed to the traditional arm/leg paradigm. dragons being coldblooded and lizardlike is probably an example of convergent evolution, perhaps scales being an adaptation to sliding more smoothly through gold piles and having better aerodynamics, with the coldblooded aspect suiting the isolated long-term hibernation/stasis cycles.
RE: @gutenberg_new@mastodon.social
So, this was a fun* little read.

i have so many thoughts about Why Men Play Rugby and so many of them are specifically about The Trite Reasons Superficially Progressive People Say Men Play Rugby

yeah yeah a grown up danny torrence had a bunch of people in a trunk in a hotel. big deal. I'VE had a bunch of people in my trunk in a hotel, and im not writing any sequels about it
does anyone ever get the feeling that they are living in the timeline that keeps them alive for the longest? that every potential car crash, even time you slip and wobble a little on a wet stairwell, every time you feel a piece of food almost get lodged in your throat, that some other world had you splattered or tumbled or choking and you're just unaware of it because it pared off from the reality in which you inhabit?
idk why but i put a proper thumb/wrist spica splint on today and i cant stop swinging my arm into an exaggerated karate chop and whispering a little miss piggy "hiiiyah!"
(half-listening to a mathematician) but surely that implies the existence of a bottomologist?
thanks very much, mister "Terry Pratchett", if that IS your real name, for forever ruining SMALLCAPS to all us shitty garbage writers who'd like to add some weight to a snippet of text every now and then but know that doing so will force our work to be compared to yours and no doubt be left direly wanting
