Just to help you get through these difficult times while there isn't yet an official #littlefedi package on #OpenBSD, here's an installer script for the binary only:

cat ./update_littlefedi.sh

#!/bin/sh set -e if [ "$(id -u)" -ne 0 ]; then echo "Run this as root." >&2 exit 1 fi

salt=dd if=/dev/random bs=128 count=1 2>/dev/null | sha1 release="littlefedi-openbsd-amd64" bin_path="/usr/local/bin/$release" tmp_path="/tmp/$(echo "$salt-date +%s" | sha1)"

mkdir -p $tmp_path ftp -o $tmp_path/$release https://littlefedi.social/downloads/binaries/$release install -b -o root -m 0755 $tmp_path/$release $bin_path rm -rf $tmp_path echo "LittleFedi updated and installed at $bin_path." exit 0

I cannot believe all this. Working wifi under #9front on a Thinkpad x131e. Only in about 389 """ easy """ steps: 1) Get a 9front-compatible WiFi card 2) Swap it out to realise this laptop has a BIOS whitelist 3) Get ANOTHER 9-front compatible WiFi card that should be on the whitelist 4) Realise this doesn't work either 5) spend weeks digging through the internet to realise I will have to do it myself 6) read Libreboot docs because it has great info on using SPI flashers 7) dig through ancient GitHub repos to find appropriate patches 8) Seek help from Masto hive-mind (mad propz to @bpl for talking me through the process and for putting up with message spam) 9) Order Pi Pico and clip 10) scour data sheets, tutorials, assemble programmer on breadboard 11) Realise certain tools will need Lunic 12) Install Lunico on old laptop 13) Uninstall distro that suxx and find another that suxx less 14) Lunic is terrifying, because what on earth is happening 15) compile a lot of strange software 16) take some deep breaths and attempt getting a read from the BIOS 17) physically hack out bits of plastic from the computer to allow access to chippage 18) read flash pleasantly surprised that it worked on second attempt 19) try patching only to get a nondescript "Error" 20) read sources, realise it is the "default error" and I will nevet know 21) Try running outdated Wimbo programmes to see if Wimbo is working when Lunic isn't 22) Givebup on Wine, also Wimbo 23) Realise Lenovo "engineers" glued the CMOS battery onto the SECOND BIOS chip 24) Get a readout of second BIOS chip (3x reads, comparing hashes) 25) Fail at it, try again at slower speed 26) Fail at it again, try again at slower slower speed 27) Get 3 consecutive and matching good reads 28) Try patching again, OMG IT WORKED 29) Flash it, with heart in throat 30) Nearly faint when it worked 31) Ignore loud beeping and RTC complaints 32) Boot 9front 33) Get appropriate firmware from OpenBSD and install in /lib/firmware 34) Rebuild kernel 35) Forget to copy over stuff to 9fat and rebuild the kernel again a few times scratching my head 36) Remember to copy stuff to 9far 37) Reboot and avoid collapsing once more when it loads the firmware 38) man wpa, run whatever is there 39) get over disbelief this actually worked 389) win

#TIL how to add swap space easily on #OpenBSD

1) Create a swapfile made of many many 0's, in the size of how large a swapfile you want, so e.g. for 16gb:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=~/.swapfile bs=1m count =16384

2) Add it as swap:
# swapctl -a ~/.swapfile

3) For great success, check it out to get warm fuzzy feelings:

$ swapctl -l
Device 512-blocks Used Avail Capacity Priority
/dev/sd2b 17065992 0 17065992 0% 0
/home/puffy/.swapfile 33554432 0 33554432 0% 0

Spent the day atop a ladder again, trying to get out of the RF hole we are in and get connected to #Meshtastic locally but even with this ridiculous setup the best I could do is a horribly degraded connection to a single node - not a single message made it out to LongFast. This was the last attempt with the rooftop. May try again with the node put on top of a tree but I am very close to giving up.

No, Meshcore won't solve this issue.

Managed to FINALLY mount an u9fs share from #OpenBSD in #9front, albeit I haven't yet managed to tackle authentication from 9 to BSD, I only managed it with -a none thus far. This isn't ideal. However, here is what I learned so far:

  • You really do need to go the inetd route as outlined in the manual, it is really finicky to run u9fs in any other way
  • However OpenBSD doesn't have 9pfs in /etc/services, but you can recycle the relevant parts from FreeBSD sauces
  • Order of parameters matters, u9fs fails if it isn't in the right order
  • Good idea to specify your own user to run it as using -u YOURBSDUSERNAME
  • u9fs logging basically doesn't exist, not even the verbose mode with -D produces anything useful usually

Amyhow I'll be interested to see if I can listen to music in 9Front over drawterm from my OpenBSD media collection.

Also please someone tell me how to do auth for u9fs.

I have to say I don't know why, until some recent discussions on the #OpenBSD mailing lists, I have not heard of the built-in calendar(1) program, but I am totally sold on its simplicity. Really easy recurring and moving events and date calculations based on Easter etc. It is parsed by cpp(1) and so you can # include other calendar files in your personal one.

I really really like this and will consider moving to this format -- 2-way sync with this via vdirsyncer or similar would be awesome to see.

Here's a snippet for sending files via serial from #OpenBSD (and other BSD systems) via direct RS232 serial using YMODEM (set to 57600 baud for great success, in my case the transfer likes to fail at higher speeds):

First you need lrzsz for sending stuff:

# pkg_add lrzsz

Then establish a serial connection:

$ cu -l /dev/cua00 -s57600 -d
Connected to /dev/cua00 (speed 57600)

Then (on a "clean" line, so perhaps press Enter once for good measure) issue the cu command:
~C
Which forks out and asks for a command you'd like to execute.
Run:

*Local command?* lsz --ymodem ~/file-to-send.bin
Sending: file-to-send.bin
Bytes Sent:1881472/5125910 BPS:5243 ETA 10:18

Then put the other machine in YMODEM receiving mode and rub your hands together in glee.

Other methods that work but are discouraged:

cu(1) actually has XMODEM transfer baked in (running the ~X command once connected) but I found it to be unreliable and slow. Don't use it.

Depending on your use case you might be able to use the ~> command in cu(1) as well, but that will just directly write file contents to the serial connections, "raw". In my case this was NOT what I wanted as I wanted to send stuff to a non-unix machine. But if you did, then you'd probably need to just cat the output of the serial connection to a file on the receiving end.

I really hope that we can see a reliable systemd port next for greater compatibility with the Windows 11 Linux Subsystem, should benefit enterprise cloud applications tremendously.

FWIW, the #MidnightBSD installation was successful but the system is in a deeply inconsistent state. Went with defaults but even the $PS1 prompt is screwed up. (Seems to have stock ksh defaults but it offered mksh as the shell as standard -- so the \u variables in the prompt do not evaluate). X11 is missing but ~/.xinitrc is populated, even though I told it to enable a graphical environment. Something seems broken with networking too, it cannot resolve the ntp servers - that is with the bogstandard axe0 Apple USB Ethernet adapter that works with everything else always.

MidnightBSD never gonna stay, I was only distrohopping, but this is rather disappointing. I'd rather debug NetBSD this evening. FWIW, #OpenBSD works without a hitch.

A "built-in VPN". Surely that built-in DNS server that the VPN routes all your traffic through and is owned by the advertising company called Mozilla is not there to harvest your behavioural data and feed it to advertisers and some AI? Surely not. That would be... Unethical.

Shoshana Zuboff in "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism" (Harvard Business School, 2019, [1]) has pointed this out a LONG time ago. Pokemon Go was always a data harvesting AND behaviour manipulation tool. Why would you physically walk where an app tells you to?! Because there bouncy creatures on the screen?

Even in the darkest nights, the Lord raises up men and women who refuse to give up, who persevere in doing good, who protect the vulnerable and open pathways to reconciliation. The memory of the saints, righteous people, and the oft-forgotten peacemakers, show us that grace does not magically eliminate conflict, but instead it inspires active resistance to evil and an astonishing creativity in doing good.” (Pope Leo XIV in Magnifica Humanitas, par. 211) #catholic

This evening at the Mass of Maundy Thursday the bells usually rung at the Consecration are replaced with the so-called "strepitus" - in some places this is a rattle, reminding us of the clamour of the crowds who derided Jesus, or, in other places, a hammer and wood - to imitate the sound of the nail being hammered into hands and feet of Christ on the cross.

An utterly harrowing experience.
