People of #marchintosh : come and join the Severed workers in Macrodata Refinement at LUMON Industries. Be a part of something mysterious and important. If you finish the file before anyone else, you may choose from a music-dance experience, or a catered office luncheon with fresh fruit and an egg bar. Do well this quarter, and you can earn a waffle party. If you choose to quit, your resignation may be denied. I nearly forgot to share this #GlobalTalk printout that arrived Saturday evening. It made me laugh out loud. Naturally, I had to put together a "family portrait" for #marchintosh!

@kalleboo@bitbang.social : This new After Dark screensaver for the #GlobalTalk network is wild! And you added a bunch of custom icons? Outstanding!

I'm sure that the original developers from Berkeley Systems would probably love seeing a new screensaver module written nearly **four decades** after the software's introduction. #marchintosh

Attention #globaltalk #marchintosh participants: *please* validate your hostnames for DNS resolution. The Apple Internet Router waits ~45 seconds for DNS resolver timeout. Each invalid hostname causes AIR to take 45 seconds longer to start. That really adds up.

See attached screenshot with colored highlights. (Note: hosts in yellow add <1 second to AIR startup because of CNAME; this is fine).

Tagging known owners in Federated Tootspace: @torbar@bitbang.social @Seg@oldbytes.space @kraptv@oldbytes.space . If anyone knows the social handles of Daniel Landberg (Oregon), and "AlexMac" (Germany), please tag them. Thanks!

I took care of that, fixed the permissions, and ran afppasswd to set the AFP password for my own account. Now I have in a working state a configuration that I would consider typical for #GlobalTalk : when logging in as Guest, I see one share with RW access (the free-for-all folder), and one folder with read-only access (sharing content for GT visitors). When I login with a known account, I see the guest shares AND my "home" folder (which is actually /home/piadmin/afp-data).

Install libevent-dev. Repeat "meson setup build" ERROR libgcrypt not found. Fucking hell. All this because I need the -Dwith-appletalk=true option? Like, why isn't there a way to include the AppleTalk functions in the standard build of netatalk that I could pull from apt get? (Update: I've reached the compile stage now... update2: netatalk is installed and running on the RPi. Thanks.)

@dmark@hachyderm.io @smallsco@oldbytes.space @nikdoof@social.doofnet.uk - I wonder if it might help newbies to have netatalk write a "note" log event to the effect of "Reading configuration file: /path/to/afp.conf", or perhaps logging a "warn" event if the config file is in a default unaltered state. The first thing I did was run "journalctl -f" to determine what netatalk was doing. I imagine others might be so inclined to tail -f /var/log/messages (or /syslog) — whatever their OS'es default log path is. OR ... make the default config file inoperable (comment everything out) until the user makes definitive changes to define a share. A blank config / commented config should cause netatalk not to run.

@kalleboo@bitbang.social - I got those screenshots you asked for about the Type 1 crash. I have WindowShade capability installed on this System 7 Mac. With the FatBits canvas open, if I double-click the window title bar to collapse the canvas, then double-clicking to expand the canvas will cause the crash. This is occurring 100% of the time. Notably, it does not happen if FatBits window is closed, or if I press the dedicated WindowShade button. Only double-clicking seems to trigger it.

@kalleboo @danieltufvesson - yep, a seasonal / annual password would suffice. The host of the file would need to rotate it sometime at the beginning of the year. Anyone (or any robot) who fetches the raw file would receive the equivalent of scrambled pay-per-view channels. Then the only question remains is how people register and maintain their nodes. The variety of data in the spreadsheet is useful but not searchable right now. It would be wonderful to access it from within a connected vintage Mac for quick reference, like knowing when someone's printer is offline (or what time zone they're in to avoid printing ImageWriter jobs at 3AM). The list also needs to auto-purge dead hosts after X number of days...

@smallsco@oldbytes.space @nikdoof@social.doofnet.uk - I can't seem to get afpd to tell me why it won't publish the shares I'm trying to define in the afp.conf file. Even if I set the log level to default:debug9. It should be flooding the journal. The folder /var/localtalk/CNID also exists.

Any suggestions to get this working? Is it a permissions issue? Do I need to define another user on the RPi? What about a guest/nobody share? I've read the docs on the netatalk site at least 3 times through.

I have Netatalk 4.4.2 + AppleTalk on a Raspberry Pi. The other AppleTalk functions appear to be working, and I can see the RPi in my zone via MacPing on my AIR Mac. The RPi is not my AIR router.

#GlobalTalk I cannot get meson setup to build #netatalk 4.4.2 because it thinks there's no database system available. I have installed both sqlite3 and mysql/mariadb, and I can't tell if Berkeley DB (dbd) is installed or even possible on this platform.

What am I missing?

Is this a known problem on Raspberry Pi's? I have a 3B+ running the latest Pi OS 13 (Trixie), released April 21. Is there a compatibility issue? Should I try an older version of Netatalk (4.3) or the 4.5 beta? Or is the OS too new and something broke the Netatalk build process? Or do I really need to configure a fully functional database ?

@kalleboo@bitbang.social @_the_cloud@mastodon.social - Here's what I've been discovering: if I double-click too quickly on the FatBits window, it crashes. If I double-click slower, it doesn't. WindowShade reacts to two clicks that are <500ms apart. Any slower, and it's just two separate clicks. Between 500-333ms, the FatBits window behaves normally and the program does not crash. If I double-click faster than around 333ms (around 1/3 second), the app crashes consistently.

@jimluther @atax1a - Jim, this is a fascinating thread. Thank you for sharing your story and these details. Do you suppose that if everyone hosting files on real Macs ran System 7.6+ with the 9.2.2 AppleShare client, and every user participating in #globaltalk did the same thing for themselves as a client, would this have a measurable impact on responsiveness of browsing shares and file transfer throughput on #globaltalk? The best transfer speed I've seen so far are about 16 KB/sec, and of course folders take ages to load. Hosting virtual Apple Internet Routers via QEMU and UTM has helped a lot. A virtual Quadra 800 running on Apple Silicon can process packets a lot faster than any real 68K or low end PPC ever could.

@scj @kalleboo @WOzFest - I'm aware this is possible to run AIRConfig while it is active and have done it many times. AIR has to be restarted to use the new hosts. I'm thinking about the scenarios for bootstrapping or resetting AIRConfig if someone is setting up first time, or redoing a corrupted file. @WOzFest 's UTM/QEMU GlobalTalk hosts are a good use case, though they come with AIRConfig preloaded. If people are making the case that @kalleboo 's hosts file contains extraneous, stale, incorrect or unresolved hostnames, who else is hosting a better quality file via http: ?

@schrockwell So... I think it may be both our faults. I have been using a chained CNAME in the spreadsheet, and so have you. Anyone who is using Apple Internet Router (AIR) would not be able to connect to me or you because MacTCP cannot resolve chained DNS aliases. It might still be the case that you have the box checked in IP tunnel: "only connect to known host IDs," so please check that, save your router file, and restart it. Either way, I've updated my DNS hostname in the master spreadsheet and @mroach 's Globaltalk Registry. You should consider doing the same. That will fix your connection for anyone running AIR with hostnames from kalleboo's default AIRConfig setting (jrouter is still in the minority).

@pitz@mastodon.social - the issue was that afpd is reading from a config file in an unexpected location: instead of /etc/netatalk/afp.conf, it's /usr/local/etc/afp.conf. I'd love for someone to explain why that makes any sense, or where in any documentation for Netatalk or Raspbian I should have known to check for this. I only discovered it by accident when running "ps -ef" to check if the daemon was actually running. After wasting hours last night, to say that this pissed me off is an understatement.

@UnePorte - but this blind man probably doesn't know is that "fax machines" have been replaced by digital versions years ago. Almost no doctor or government agency is monitoring a paper fax machine anymore. That is too unreliable. These fax services take a real fax line and turn it into a digital one, then create a digital copy of the received document and send it into a system that resembles email. The company that gave birth to this eternal legacy crutch ? J2, the artist formerly known as "eFax." If the US government ever passes a law requiring the use of secure digital transmission (which would translate to email), that will be the day that J2/Fax files for bankruptcy.
