After brewing the Polotmavé today (I have the previous batch still on tap and will pour a glass soon) I decided to drink an Altbier first.

@briankrebs@infosec.exchange I had just moved from Tokyo to Silicon Valley in 1995 - the year of the Netscape IPO and arguable the start of the .com era and bubble. Five years of irrational exuberance later it crashed. Timing is looking similar on this bubble. But I don’t recall those years being driven by such a small handful of companies. Let’s see

@cdarwin@c.im he actually said “mutilation” instead of “mutilization” or whatever mutilation of the English language he usually uses? These people are are scared of the wave of rejection and change that is coming. They reek of desperation. Good!

@bruces you can call me a pompous asshole and wanker who stole taxpayer funded intellectual property from NCSA to make my fortune and remind me that I actually had no idea about true innovators like Ted Nelson and Doug Engelbart. And since I have no inner dialogue you can accuse me of anything and I won’t have any regrets or self reflection.

@pippa@famichiki.jp Sky has a serious look. Like “I know I’m a good boy and it’s my birthday so I will let you take my photo” His face reminds me of the actor Stephen Graham. Don’t know why but that is what really jumped into my mind seeing the photo.

@sundogplanets@mastodon.social when I first moved to NZ 20 years ago I remember stepping outside one night, looking up, and thinking “strange to see clouds stretched across the sky like that” until I quickly realized it was the Milky Way. And this was North Shore Auckland, just across the bridge. When you get away from the light pollution of Auckland it is indeed mind blowingly dark. Hope you might get lucky with an aurora show while you are in NZ.

@11TopHats@mastodonapp.uk I made them and tried them for the first time this evening. Unbelievable. I had excess marinade so bought mushrooms and have a jar of those to try soon also. These eggplants with also some feta cheese and rustic bread are a divine combination with this rioja I found tucked away in my wine cellar. I’ll try to remember to take a photo next time. Was too eager to try them.

@anildash@me.dm one important note/correction to one statement in your article. You said in 2002 the podcast wasn’t yet invented. Actually @carlmalamud@official.resource.org invented (but it wasn’t called) podcasts in 92/93 by hosting guests on his Internet Radio show. It was revolutionary. There were also guys from DEC streaming (via multicast on the MBone) their band sessions from the basement in Palo Alto in the early 90s. Doesn’t detract from the awesome write up. Just some Internet trivia that some of us old timers fondly recall.

@marcoarment@mastodon.social if we think about it - programming languages have largely been about enabling yet another layer of abstraction and becoming more human friendly. From flipping switches, to assembly/machine language to C to Java, Perl, etc … (except Perl, that was an abomination). Natural language to an LLM that will use whatever language is appropriate seems like the natural next step.

@KathyReid Doug Engelbart showed us “a future” with his mother of all demos. Sometime in the later half of the 90s when it complete changed from connecting people to communicate to connecting people to monetize them seems to have been the final throw of the switch with no return.
