Clement, burning bright, emerges into the sun from beneath the sage, miaowing and smelling faintly of stuffing.

30 Jul:
Peppers stuffed with hake 'brandade'
A successful experiment. Based on the classic Spanish peppers stuffed with salt cod brandade. Blitzed the hake with olive oil and garlic, and stuffed inside small red peppers. Baked in tomato sauce (tin of toms, oil and smoked paprika mostly). Kept the skin to crisp of course.
Next time might lightly poach or brine the fish first and add more oil, but pretty good for guesswork.
21 Jul:
Tuna with green goddess sauce
26 Jul:
Roast lamb
Although it may not look like it from the photos, we're on a - continuing - effort to lose some of the weight that has slowly piled on over years of indulging in food and drink. Portions have been smaller and we've cut out some of the booze (while still drinking more than recommended...).
My use of butter has probably been cut by three quarters and I've been sparing with other delicious things while trying to keep everything tasting great.
I'm not expecting (or aiming) to get back to my 9 stone, 28 inch waist, assisted-blond twink self from the late 90s, but it's a sensible thing to be doing.
Anyway, that's a preamble to offer an excuse as to why those roast potatoes look disappointing - far too little fat on them!
18 Jul:
Asa Shorba
Injera topped with Misr Wat, Beg Siga Wat, greens cooked like gomen
Ethiopian night.
Fabulous fish soup to start; both punchy and mild - the kind of soup that feels like it's doing you good as you eat it.
Misr Wat is a lovely spicy lentil stew and the Beg Siga Wat, a spiced lamb stew.
Sadly, I totally messed up the injera, all of which stuck to the pan. I'd done the 24 hour ferment version, but unlike the last times I've made it, these were a disaster. Hid it well on the plate, by putting the tidier bits at the edge and hiding the mess with the dishes. They tasted good however, so that's the main thing I suppose.
All the recipes from the excellent cookbook Ethiopia by Yohanis Gebreyesus.
19 Jul:
Brined pork, fennel salad
15 Jul:
Chilled buckwheat noodles
Dressed in soy, rice vinegar, sesame oil mix and served fridge cold. Very refreshing.
14 Jul:
Basa en papillote, crushed potato, leek
27 Jul:
Moussaka
25 Jul:
Smoked mackerel pate
Crisp mackerel skin and quick dill cucumber pickle. There was also miso and mustard pork loin with crushed potato and garlic greens, but after bringing the food outside and then having to move Clement from my seat to another one round the patio table before starting meant I forgot to take a pic. Ah well, seldom happens.
29 Jul:
Orecchietti with peas, lemon and mint
16 Jul:
Spicy sausage with potato and pepper hash
28 Jul:
Denver steak, porcini and garlic sauce
That was a lot tastier than the awful, odd lighting photo shows. I've had a run of poor photos recently; must do better.
20 Jul:
Spiced pork noodles
29 May:
Pork ribs
26 May:
Spiced lamb, garlic and sumac mangetout, tzatziki, stuffed peppers, yoghurt flatbread
The peppers came from a jar, I confess.
13 May:
Charred broccoli and kimchi noodles
24 Jul:
Squid and tomato risotto
17 Jul:
Amatriciana
17 May:
Short rib, asparagus, king oyster mushroom, beef and tarragon sauce
Slightly different take on roast beef and Yorkshire pudding for Sunday lunch.
15 May:
Sole Veronique
28 Apr:
Sausage with warm potato and pepper salad
22 May:
Fried basa with roast veg and basil, polenta chips
Funny lighting (boo) as it was our first outside dinner (yay) of the year.
18 May:
Short-rib and onion pie
There were extra ribs on Sunday, so leftovers pie for Monday. Always good.
27 Apr:
Pörkölt with spaetzle
25 Apr:
Copenhagen* asparagus
Sirloin dressed with chilli, garlic and herbs, pommes dauphinois
*Not really a thing, but I had a dish of asparagus, melted cheesee and lovely little fjord prawns in Copenhagen about 15 or so years ago and have recreated it every asparagus season since.
14 May:
Sausage, chicken and onion sauce, crushed new potatoes and peas
Warmer weather bangers, mash and onion gravy innit!
23 Apr:
Tuna, sun-dried tomato tapenade, warm potato and greens
Bonus shot of the outrageously good cheddar, chilli and lime pickle scones I made yesterday. From a recipe in The Guardian, which I saw and knew I'd have to make.
30 May:
Asparagus with sauce gribiche
Chicken Kyiv
The chicken breasts were quite small (I don't normally buy breasts, I usually get either a whole bird or thighs) so I made one enormous Kyiv using both breasts and halved it for serving.
7 May:
Sirloin with porcini sauce
Dark, intense porcini sauce made this feel like the poshest chips and gravy ever.
6 May:
Ribollita
Not a great looker, but hearty and very tasty no meat night dinner. One of the occasions to use those heels of parmesan that collect in the fridge too.
2 May:
Asparagus with buttered crab
Pork chop, apples, calvados and tarragon sauce
Although the day was warm, it turned into a dark, rainy evening so made possibly the last cooler weather dish for a while with the pork chop.
25 May:
Gammon, white and green asparagus, Jersey Royals, Hollandaise sauce
Delightful as it is to eat outside, the light in the back garden in the evening is really not conducive to photos. May have to snap the food inside before taking it out.
21 May:
Roast chicken thighs, tarragon sauce, sauteed potatoes with roast garlic
20 May:
Spaghetti alla Norma
Not quite authentic as it was a surprise dinner (was meant to be away for a couple of nights) and I had no basil, but it's definitely got Norma genes.
19 May:
Merguez, spiced tomato sauce, tabbouleh, sheep cheese
3 May:
Herb-crusted rack of lamb with lamb and rosemary sauce
Tarte Tatin
Warm weather Sunday lunches begin. Bonus Tarte Tatin. It could have done with more caramelisation, but it wasn't bad; I'm not a natural dessert cook.
22 Apr:
Rigatoni with broccoli, walnuts and Yorkshire blue cheese
Half of the broccoli cooked down and pureed with olive oil for the base sauce, the rest blanched then griddled. Used walnut oil as a dressing, but it got a bit lost. Probably needed more.
4 May:
Slow cooked duck leg, roast garlic, braised radicchio
26 Apr:
Roast pork
What a delight at King's Cross station this lunchtime. Some poor soul had been hit by a train near Stevenage so nothing was leaving. A large crowd stood staring at the departure boards with their flashing Delayed and Cancelled notices.
Through this mass, most people slowly weaved through, but one obnoxious fucker marched at the crowd yelling 'excuse me' and expecting everyone to part red sea-like for him, and shouting when people didn't.
What a self-important, arrogant prick. Angry, red-faced and blue-blazered. Like if Steven Berkoff were playing Alan Partridge.
I gave up in the end and will head oop north to see poor old mum next week instead.
8 May:
Fish pie
