@grumpyoldtechie@hostux.social @msbellows@c.im @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org The South Africans also had a DC3 with one DC2 wing. Those things were bestial. Uncompromisingly airworthy. Why do I bother to say "were"? After all, FAA lists it as the one airframe with no life limit. A friend of mine has a story of visiting an aviation museum, and having the docent point at one hanging from the ceiling to say "we're losing that one next week, it's going back into service".

I always laugh at British people for going to Cornwall on holiday, because it's so often overcast. Well, the joke is on me this time!

So far as I can tell, the arguments for replacing #X11 by #Wayland are :

→ X11 is old, and computer programmers are compulsive novelty–seekers who burn down their own homes every 2—3 years on average

→ X11 does not support a small number of exotic use cases, which could reasonably be handled by specialized software

→ X11 has numerous sets of extensions which all do pretty much the same thing in subtly different ways

@loriemerson@post.lurk.org

How far back do you have to go, to find a time when many people would have agreed that slavery fell in the category of "family and community relationships", and was even among the most important? Technological innovation disrupted that, by separating the processing of chemical energy into mechanical work from the human body. I for one have no desire to go back.

@guffo The problem becomes when you have to use that piece of Internet in order to perform important or routine tasks. Laundromats where you can only activate the machines using a smartphone app are just the tip of the iceberg.

@pinhman@mstdn.ca @gemlog@tilde.zone @crispius@mstdn.fname.ca @SnowyCA@social.vivaldi.net GM brought Hayek to America and published "The Road to Serfdom" as a comic book to make union-busting seem family-friendly. I'm not saying that "Austrian economics" started out as motivated reasoning, but it quickly became that. In any case, Hayek's general point about "temporary" crisis measures fossilizing into long-term practice turns out to be a lot more cogent and relevant than the specific kinds of measures he was worrying about.

Situations where the image is copyrighted but the audio is public-domain, or vice versa. The US Congress only recently passed legislation to address sound recording copyrights in a more uniform fashion.

South Africa is an important producer of uranium, which is recovered from gold-mine tailings. In fact South Africa supplied a substantial amount of the uranium required for the Manhattan Project, and for US nuclear activities of all kinds for years afterwards.

South Africa also had an early interest in nuclear power, because of the long distance between its major coalfields and the large industrial and population centers of the Cape Town and East Cape regions.

Today's A STEP FARTHER OUT on #anonradio has NASA going to the Moon in a very desultory fashion ; nobody going to Mars this year ; me unhappily going to Washington DC and then onward to Canada, a science-fiction convention in the Dallas area, and then Europe ; and Friedrich Merz admitting that antinuclear policies are wrongheaded, but not going to try to change anything.

I decline to state whether "artificial general intelligence" is possible or not. I do not believe that we understand the problem adequately to frame the question, much less answer it.

But I can say with great confidence that "large language models" are quite irrelevant to the whole topic. They pose, however, a very special kind of epistemic risk, in that they corrupt the automated, high-speed information indexing and retrieval systems which modern society depends upon.

Anyone who would caucus with a party which has Mr Trump at the head of it has exactly no credibility with me. And anyone who says he's not EXACTLY that stupid is trying to fool someone (maybe himself).

@EvanHahn This is interesting, but it appears that only one ownership-asserting URL is allowed, and protocol (http vs https) matters. Given that what I'm putting on the Web is mostly non-interactive documents, it doesn't make sense for me to require TLS. Am I just misunderstanding something, or can I not use the one humans.json file to assert ownership of the site, whether served over http or https?

@wikkit@mastodon.social Among the many books accumulated by my late grandfather the petroleum engineer was a volume on PERT from around 1965. I really don't know how it was deployed in the Polaris program, but I've often heard that its main function in the Apollo program was to create a giant, hangar-sized diagram at Marshall which was deployed to baffle and intimidate visiting Congressmen who wanted to know where all the money was going and when they would see results.

@tivasyk@mycrowd.ca @CrimethInc@todon.eu It was considered a basic principle of international law that refusing to allow the nationals of a country to pass through your country could constitute a casus belli. The situation with entering to stay was more complex, but even so. Sure, it would be absurd to claim that it was a paradise of equality. There were different kinds of restrictions and barriers than today. But measures such as the Chinese Exclusion Act were widely recognized as exceptional and abnormal.

@benjamincox@writing.exchange @internetarchive@mastodon.archive.org @jessica@beige.party Generally speaking, if something is PD in the USA, it's PD everywhere, because the USA has (ab)used the Berne Convention to impose its copyright law elsewhere, by way of something called "the rule of the longer term". Very few countries have longer copyright terms than the USA.
