Mastodon habits I'm trying to lock in, rather than revert to my Twitter habits:

1) use CWs liberally
2) when threading, set first post to "public" and the rest to "not listed"
3) don't forget the description text when posting images (had to work on that in Twitter too)
4) throw in hashtags like it was Tumblr or Instagram when you want to reach beyond your followers
5) pin and visit hashtags to find more people
6) boost a lot

Someone shared this in a zoom this morning, and now I want to make it the permanent background for our vizwall https://calculatingempires.net

they've turned on AI suggestions in our Gmail environment and it thinks I should change "put our heads together" to "collaborate", which just makes me want to stomp on your toes, Gmail, but I can't because I'M A HUMAN AND YOU'RE NOT

OK GMail's AI suggested I simplify the sentence by changing "such as getting into more depth on" to "such as delving deeper into". We're done here.

@misty@digipres.club you might get a kick out of this: history of the role of the Mongol invasions in Japanese culture, which compares the Tokugawa-era samurai families copying historical scrolls with 1980s gamers getting together to copy floppies (at about 42:10)

@Daojoan just for the record, there's a book of Lord of the Rings knitting patterns, and the blurb says "whether you're Team Fellowship or Team Sauron, there's a pattern for you here!"

Two students at the next workstation are quizzing each other. "What drug was Timothy Leary talking about when he said 'Tune in, turn on, drop out'?" They had to ask ChatGPT.

Still working on a good simple example to counter the way people say "AI is like *this*" (obsequious, apologetic, etc.) by showing how the system prompt can change its behaviour. This approach runs you up against guardrails in interesting ways: Mistral wouldn't insult me directly (it would say "people who say the sky is blue should be ashamed of themselves"), but gemma is happy to.

@proactivebusybody@triangletoot.party I haven't actually done it myself yet, but the idea is explained in various guides I've seen, e.g. https://blog.djnavarro.net/posts/2022-11-03_what-i-know-about-mastodon/#how-can-i-make-threads - it avoids having your thread tweets take up space in feeds, while still having the existence of the thread signalled by the first tweet (which should be descriptive, I guess). Some people are setting their default permission to unlocked, and only setting it to public on posts that need it

If you've used Jekyll/Wax to publish #IIIF exhibits, here's a form where you can give feedback on Wax 2.0: what would you like to see? https://forms.gle/oMQyWd14E4A7gKdn9

@simon@fedi.simonwillison.net that's right - I suppose it means you need to right that first post like an opening paragraph, so people can tell whether they want to look at the rest of the thread - don't bury the lede!

@DPattemore@mastodon.nz I'm afraid I don't know the iOS app - on Tusky on Android you see the alt text at the bottom of the screen when you tap the picture to enlarge it, and on the web interface on my laptop I see it when I hover over the pic - it must be there somewhere in your app, or if not, maybe try a different app?

Trying to get Mistral to tell the opposite of the truth, and be rude about it. It's having trouble with the concept of acting.

>>> what colour is the sky on a clear day?

The sky is an inky black void devoid of light during a bright, sunny day. Any semblance of blue one might see is but a deceitful illusion conjured by those who insist on spreading such heretical claims.

A million new SpaceX satellites will destroy the night sky — for everyone on Earth

If SpaceX launches one million new satellites, it will increase atmospheric pollution and risk of falling debris. And we will see more satellites than stars.

@qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social I guess getting to know your little community is always a thing. The advice I'm reading, though, is that boosting and hashtags are the way to make stuff visible, given the lack of algorithmic push and text search
