I do network science, graph algorithms, graph theory, dynamical systems and complexity science in general. But really, a lot of it is computational plant biology. And most of it relies on simulations.

Then I practice taekwon-do (ITF) and I roam in the mountains.

Oh, yes, I almost forgot, the probability of an event is the fraction of times it occurs, and that's it.

@benroyce @QasimRashid may I add one? In Neapolitan, which is the local language spoken in the area around Naples, in Italy, the word for a very respectful greeting is "salamallecc".

@invisibleghost777 @Tutanota @HowTheyVoteEU what can I say? Amongst the Italian MEPs, the only ones who voted against it were the communists and the Lega, which is a party literally founded on racism as an ideology. WTF! ALL the members of the Democratic Party voted in favour. I repeat myself, WTAF!!!

@dpiponi I completely and wholeheartedly agree! And I believe the same holds for higher layers of abstraction. The preaching of Python to the masses, for example, made everyone believe they are good programmers, if not even good computer scientists. The result is that current researchers write scientific computing codes, such as for simulations, that run, on modern hardware, in a time that is a factor of 10 larger than what was needed 20 years ago for the same task, on the hardware available at the time.

@vnikolov@ieji.de @hans @benroyce@mastodon.social @randahl@mastodon.social exactly. I may also add that Radev's party contains some people whom I know personally and are actually very good, and some others, whom I also know personally, and that I don't consider good at all! So, let's hope that the former will prevail. 😆 Also, I corrected the typo.

@vnikolov@ieji.de @hans @benroyce@mastodon.social @randahl@mastodon.social my 2 Eurocents from what I'm seeing locally. At the moment, rumours are that he's going to appoint Dimitar Stoyanov as minister of defence and Ivan Shishkov as minister of regional development. I note that the former has a strong pro-Ukraine stance, and the latter oversaw the completion of the gas bypass that strongly reduced Bulgarian dependence on Russian gas. Also, he's already released pro-EU, pro-NATO and pro-Euro declarations via spokespersons. Additionally, he seems very strongly against Peevski, who is, in all truth, a really scary man and the one true oligarch in Bulgarian politics. Finally, he forced the resignation of prosecutor general Borislav Sarafov, who is Peevski's man. So, as things stand, I believe the fibrillation around him may be unwarranted, and I'm also mildly optimistic. Then, of course, we'll judge by their actions.

@benroyce TBF, NATO is supposedly the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but some of its members are nowhere close to the Atlantic Ocean. Also, states that are not geographically in Europe are considered to be part of the EU in some specific cases. For example, for research funding, both Japan and Israel are considered as being part of the EU.

@Lana@beige.party indeed! And it holds everywhere. I'm not American, but yesterday I mailed my early vote for the Italian constitutional referendum, even though I currently live abroad. Hell, even if "my" side ends up losing, I hope the turnout will be huge, so at least I will know we won't have lost because people didn't vote.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @rzadkie@techhub.social @nf3xn@mastodon.social @ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social Four more photos. The first is the whole of the monument, seen from the slopes of the mountain. The second is a shot of the area taken from the Malak Tarsovets, which is a peak lying almost exactly halfway between Buzludzha and the Shipka Pass, which was the theater of a prolonged bloody battle between the Bulgarian and Russian forces on one side, and the Ottomans on the other. Around the Buzludzha, you can see the wind turbines of both halves of the Vetropark (Wind Park). Left is north, with the turbines on the mountains of the Bedek group, whereas right is south, and the turbines are on the Mogili. The third photo is a panorama taken from the Atovo Padalo, which is the first peak of the Bedek group, and the beginning of the northern half of the Wind Park. Both Buzludzhi peaks are visible on the right, with the monument on the small one. The last one is the tower of the monument, backlit by the sun. It has a distinctly Mordor feel to me... you can almost see the eye of Sauron on the top.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @rzadkie@techhub.social @nf3xn@mastodon.social @ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social that's natural, and, if you like alpine landscapes, you should see the Beklemeto pass. The location can be treacherous. I had a small accident there and got stuck 2 hours trying to climb down safely, and many expert people died due to sudden unexpected weather changes. The Communists put a prison camp there, probably because of the difficulty of escaping. But the landscape is nothing short of striking.

@benroyce@mastodon.social @rzadkie@techhub.social @nf3xn@mastodon.social @ObsidianUrbex@mstdn.social yes, the reason is that, just below it on the same mountain, in the end on the 19th century, some 20 people met and founded the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party. They chose the location because there were massive celebrations going on for the anniversary of the death of Hadzhi Dimitar, who was an ill-fated rebel against Ottoman rule, so they had plausible deniability for their meeting. In fact, the twin peak of the one with the structure, which sits just opposite, is called Hadzhi Dimitar Peak. The event happened about halfway between the torch monument you can see in one of the pictures and the UFO-like structure. Currently, there is a mountain shelter a few metres away, where there is a great water source, which is quite welcome if one has been hiking for a few hours. Incidentally, the "ruins" that can be seen in another picture are the remains of a second torch monument, which was literally torn to pieces several years ago by thieves who were after the large amount of metal used to construct it. Apparently, this occurred in the presence of the architect who designed it, and who just happened to be passing by. The name of the mountain, Buzludzha, literally means Icy, and indeed, the temperature there is often considerably lower than in the nearby towns. Also, almost at the base of the peak, there is a cave, which now is dangerous to enter, with naturally occurring (and growing) ice formations, which was used in ottoman times by people to collect ice for their needs. I have some pictures of the area I took myself. Maybe I can post some.

It's a *fantastic* place as a start to numerous mountain hikes, of varying difficulty, from family-friendly picnic to 12 hours of "I may not be coming back". Anyway the area around there is spectacular!

@fabio@manganiello.eu great toot! 👏🏻 I completely agree with this, and I'm very happy to see someone still remembers how AI research was done before the Bayesian shit became the fad it is now. I literally feel less lonely now. 😃 FWIW, I have said similar things many times, and I have often received very harsh, knee-jerk reactions. In one case I remember well, I was telling this to some students, and a colleague physically took them away, telling them with alarm "Come, come, don't listen to him, let's go away!". In fact, the whole episode was very similar to the meme of the mother telling her kid not to look at some specific people, lest they become alike.

@fabio with the premise that I agree with the post in principle and certainly in spirit, there is still one big problem. Some companies (and some universities) require the use of authenticating apps that only run on "official" Android/iOS. Some banking applications have a similar requirement. What is a viable way to work around this, if there is one?

At the network-science workshop in the SigmaPhi Conference, we will have an impressive lineup of speakers, and there is also the opportunity to give contributed talks. Everyone is most welcome to apply. Submit your title and abstract at https://afea.eventsair.com/international-conference-of-statistical-physics-sigmaphi2026/abstract-portal and specify you want to talk at the W2 workshop.

And of course, please boost like mad and share the news with all your friends and colleagues!

@dangoodin@infosec.exchange I have an old Sansa Clip + that I use. The factory codec is bad, as the frequencies of the sounds are subtly wrong, so I flashed it and installed linux on it, with the added benefit of having flac support. Now I'm happy with the sound quality. I hope this helps...
