🎉 Big news: OSRM now has official Python bindings — pip install osrm-bindings
Native bindings to osrm-backend via nanobind, wired straight into our automatic release pipeline. Route, table, match, trip and nearest, all from Python, no server hop required.
This one's thanks to contributor Nils Nolde, who kept pushing this over the finish line through months of iteration.
Proof that persistence pays off. 🙌
OSRM's trip plugin is getting a proper solver upgrade: PR in review now.
For small trips (< 15 stops), we now run Held-Karp DP which is exact optimal. Larger trips get optimised. The old heuristic is gone for good.
Also shipping a static trip.html demo alongside it.
🚀 OSRM v26.7.0
• Fixed a routing correctness bug: self-loops (dead-ends/loop roads) weren't always handled right, could affect route quality
• More accurate location snapping: stale client hints no longer override fresh phantom node lookups
• Trip demo: routes now shareable via link → https://project-osrm.org/trip.html
Mostly maintenance otherwise: CI/build modernization, C++20 migration, dep updates.

Uber ran on OpenStreetMap data. Hollywood noticed. 🎬 #TBT to OSRM’s cameo in Showtime’s “Super Pumped” — Travis Kalanick pitching open-source routing at Google HQ. Based on a true story. 🗺️ #OpenStreetMap #OSRM
🔧 We've simplified dependency management in OSRM‘s backend.
Moved to a single vcpkg-based workflow across Linux, macOS, Windows, and Docker.
Result: faster CI, reproducible builds, fewer platform quirks, and much easier dependency updates. Vendored copies removed and build setup cleaned up.
One path, less maintenance, more reliability.
Experimental isochrone endpoint update: now with a time slider. Drag it, watch the reachable area update in real time. Still rough around the edges, but the direction is clear. 🗺️ #OpenStreetMap #routing #geospatial #OSRM
It looks like a nice list has been put together over at RERITE — a working group dedicated to reproducible research in transportation engineering (rerite.org/about.html). Open datasets, benchmarks, and tools for transportation research have all been curated in one place.
Oh, and OSRM happened to get a mention in there too. 👀

Sunday funday: does this location drive on the left?
Click anywhere on Earth. Blue = left. Orange = right. Runs right in your browser via WebAssembly.
Tiny tool, real purpose. Getting left/right-hand traffic right is foundational for improving worldwide driving profiles. More coming.
🗺️ osrm-frontend v0.5.0 is out!
Highlights from 2026:
• 🔀 URL history navigation (back/forward support)
• 🗣️ Browser language preference respected
• 🔍 Persistent Nominatim geocoder cache
• 🔗 ?src/?dst params for address deep-linking
• ⚡ Migrated build tooling to Vite
• 🚲 Auto-toggle bike overlay on profile switch
• 🗺️ Custom base layer via URL param
• 📍 Customisable Nominatim endpoint
• Various bug fixes & dependency updates
OSRM v26.6.1 is out 🚀
Highlights: fixed OSM node ID truncation in route/match annotations, faster MLD path unpacking with a two-tier cache ⚡, better access tag handling for car and bicycle profiles, corrected Earth radius constant 🌍, and a trip service refactor: Try the new demo before it gets integrated into the official frontend at https://project-osrm.org/trip.html
Packages and container images to appear in the nect hours in their usual places.
🔧 Build environment update:
OSRM's Linux baseline is now Debian 13 (Trixie) and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Minimum compiler support moves to Clang 18 and GCC 14. Windows builds are on Visual Studio 2025.
Later this year we also plan to drop macOS Intel support.
We continuously upgrade to modern environments, keeping the codebase clean and dependencies current.
If you're building from source, now's a good time to check your toolchain.
Contributing to OSRM just got easier. 😌✌🏻🦾
Less manual overhead, more automation. For starters:
Conventional Commits replace hand-maintained Changelogs. The number one source of merge conflicts for the past years automated away and gone for good.
And vcpkg simplified the convoluted dependency management enabling static builds.
More of these quality of life improvements coming. If you’ve been on the fence, now’s a good time.
Axios used OSRM to analyze how far millions of Americans would need to drive to register to vote under the proposed SAVE Act — routing every 5-mile cell in the U.S. to its nearest elections office.
Their finding: 5M+ voting-age Americans would face 1+ hour drives. The average: ~20 minutes.
Open-source routing, real-world impact. 🗺️
