I'm an old fart who grew up watching (and loving) #StarTrek #NextGen and the other Rick Berman shows #DS9, #Voyager, and #Enterprise … and I gotta say: #StarfleetAcademy is the first post-Berman reboot of the franchise I truly enjoyed. Its creators returned to Gene Roddenberry's optimistic vision of the future as infinite diversity in infinite combinations. #IDIC 🖖

Every time I work with high-ranking policymakers, I am surprised how little they know about #science. Mostly they seem to view empirical science as just another opinion driven by subjective interests, thus being perfectly equivalent to ideology or belief. Unfortunately, this explains a lot.

In our #Ampelokipoi neighbourhood of #Athens, #Greece, the police inspected the roof of a 16-story apartment building following a complaint. On the roof, they found a small farm (!) with 15 goats, 36 chickens, and three ducks.
Satellite/aerial images of the building also show several green areas that seem to be vegetable patches. 😶

There is another door next to the one in the photo; however, neither of the two doors are open to the public, and there certainly is no public passageway through that building.
The attached screenshot provides an example route (with a red circle indicating the location of the door).
Heutiges Highlight des Göttinger Straßenverkehrs: Dame steigt vor einer roten Ampel vom E-Bike, wuchtet es umständlich auf den Gehweg, steigt wieder auf und quetscht sich an der engsten Stelle mit einem genervten „Darf ich mal vorbei!!“ zwischen mehreren Fußgängys durch.

- Being a reviewer myself, I am highly aware of the vastly increasing number of submissions written with the aid of AI and lacking proper verification - and also of colleagues who do not cross-check citations when they review articles.
However, to me this is just another symptom of a well-known problem in academia that existed long before AI: Scientists take shortcuts because they perceive publishing as an annoying side effect - rather than an essential part - of research.

However, there is one benefit to reviewing: It gives you free access to the latest research - in a raw, sort of “unfiltered” form before it gets smoothed out by the publication process.
